2026 PBS Bear Camp Live

This week Aaron Miller joins Alan Altizer to discuss our responsibilities as traditional bowhunters, and how to share the lessons and ethics that a traditional bowhunter learns over their lifetime of experiences. “We have been blessed to have hunted the hard way.” But this path has taught the bowhunter so many things and has provided teaching tools which can be used to mentor the next generations. These tools can be used to teach them how to be better hunters, but more importantly, life lessons which teach them to be better men and women. Too few kids today have guidance and mentorship in the outdoors. Whether it is a person’s own children, or someone else’s, it is our responsibility to share our knowledge and passion for the outdoors. The best part to bowhunting is sharing the knowledge we have with others and seeing their success as we watch the next generations become better than us.

This week Alan Altizer is honored once again to be joined by one of Montana’s legendary traditional bowhunters, Rosey Roseland. Rosey is considered one of the most outstanding Traditional Bowhunters of modern times. His group of trad hunting friends were so successful at killing animals, they were known as “The Wolf Pack”! Among this group was one of his closest friends, Montana legend Paul Schafer. This week Rosey graciously shares a few stories about time spent with Paul. Now in his 70’s, Rosey is living in Alaska and still bowhunting, fishing, and trapping. Additionally, Rosey passes on a few stories of the old days and other friends, and he gives some pointers on setups and bowhunting tips that he has learned from his life as an outdoorsman.   Although Schafe has been gone for way too many years, his memories and stories live on through the Rose.

This week Ethan and Terry Receuver join Alan to talk about the Professional Bowhunter Society and Compton Traditional Bowhunters.  These two national organizations are great for both bow hunters, and bow hunting!  Terry and Ethan talk about the similarities of the two organizations and the benefits of being a member of both.  And we discuss how these two groups work together on issues throughout North America affecting bow hunting opportunities. 

The excitement of being within Trad range of an animal definitely will make the heart pound. But being within Trad range of a grizzly takes it to a whole other level. It is imperative that the hunter makes no mistakes and stays focused on the job at hand. One small lapse in focus can mean a blown hunt, or death in the jaws of one of the most formative animals a bowhunter could ever dream of hunting. It takes a special hunter to take a grizzly with traditional gear. Rick Snell, “Mr. Grizzly”, has spent much of his life hunting these magnificent animals with his recurve. This week Rick joins Alan Altizer as he shares several grizzly hunts and a couple of black bear stories. Having taken over 20 grizzlies with a recurve, he has some incredible stories. This is an exciting show!!!

“This is one of the most important shows that we have produced!!” This week Alan Altizer and Bob Foulkrod have a hard-core discussion concerning tracking of a wounded animal. “It’s totally a matter of respect to the animal and bowhunting to make every effort to recover the animal.” But tracking is an art and a process that requires a great deal of patience and determination. It is a facet of woodsmanship that requires ongoing practice and experience prior to the hunt. These two friends have tracked hundreds of animals over the years and share their opinions and knowledge that has been refined over nearly sixty years. “To be an ethical outdoorsman and a good bowhunter, you have to be an even better tracker!” This one is a must.

This week Alan Altizer is once again honored to be joined by the Montana/Alaskan bowhunter Rosey Roseland. Rosey dives into several decades worth of bear hunting knowledge, graciously sharing his “Knowledge Through Experiences” as he discusses a wide range of bear hunting techniques and experiences including currently hunting brown bear at the time of this recording! Additionally, Rosey shares some great bear hunting stories including one of his wife’s kills and a Paul Schafer story. This week it's all turkey talk! Dalton and Alan sit down to discuss both of their successes and failures thus far in the 2026 Turkey Season, in both Tennessee and North Carolina. We break down two successful hunts as well as tips and tricks for bowhunting turkeys in general. This episode also includes a special focus on Dalton's recent quest of taking a mountain longbeard without the aid of a blind, a tall task indeed! As always, you'll find a good portion of humor, woodsmanship, and general hunting knowledge tossed in. Enjoy!

This week friends Alan Altizer and Rob Burnham sit down to reflect on the paths bowhunting has taken each of them on throughout their lives. With over a hundred years of bowhunting experiences between them, these two share their very early years as kids with bows and arrows, then all the way to where they are today. And it is very apparent that the love for traditional bowhunting is stronger today than ever. This is not only a fun bunch of stories, but an outline of what is truly important, and how a young hunter can set goals and reach their dreams. Additionally, each shares their personal approaches on making the shot count when the opportunity presents itself. Although each have taken numerous species and impressive trophies, that is not what they define as success. Success is found in their love of bowhunting and sharing this passion. They may be old and grey but carrying a trad bow allows them to still be kids at heart.

This week Alan Altizer is joined by one of traditional bowhunting’s best, Mike Mitten. Mike has done it all and is extremely well known for his solo adventures in the Alaskan wilderness in search of the Alaskan moose. Over the years Mike has graciously shared his adventures, and more importantly, his love and respect for the wild places and traditional bowhunting through his writing, lectures, and video productions. Additionally, he has provided monumental support to bowhunting organizations such as PBS and Compton. This week he once again shares his love for bowhunting and discusses his new book, “The Enchantment of Bowhunting”. Set in on this conversation and share in our love for hunting with the bow and arrow.
