Hindley immediately starts to take revenge on Heathcliff, removing his rights to an education and forcing him to labour in the fields. Catherine and Heathcliff are still able to escape to the moors every not and again to avoid Hindley after Heathcliff's work is done. One evening Heathcliff and Catherine disappear for the night, and Hindley ordered the doors to be bolted. Nelly chooses to wait up for for them none the less, but they do not come home together, Heathcliff comes back alone. He tells Nelly that they went to spy on the Linton's at Thrushcross Grange, but they got attacked by the Linton's dog. Unable to return home and eventually identified by the Lintons, Catherine is invited to stay with them until she recovers. Heathcliff is refused entry to the home because of his origins and harsh mannerisms. Mr Linton comes the following day to inform Hindley what happened, and following his departure, Hindley forbids Heathcliff from speaking to Catherine, threatening to kick him out.
