Our summer of guests may be over, but we still have work that needs to be done! In the late 2000s/early 2010s, YouTube was going from being just a place for quirky videos--to a place where people also listened to music. This took the form of cover videos, indie bands (most notably OK Go&#39;s various videos), ironic acoustic covers of rap songs, and mashups/remixes. It was a golden age of YouTube, free of ads and full of wonderment and joy. Today we&#39;re celebrating the impressive mashup culture of the day and there&#39;s no better way to do that than cover one of the greatest video game/hip-hop mashups ever done, &quot;The Ocarina of Rhyme&quot; by Team Teamwork, based on the music of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo 64. THEN, we decided to cover a few extra tracks from Alex Kresovich, a man that was inspired by Ocarina of Rhyme to do his own video game/hip-hop mashup called &quot;Gold N&#39; Fly 007&quot; based on the music of Goldeneye 64. By 1975, after 3 or 4 albums of success that shot him into the stratosphere, Stevie Wonder was ready to call it quits. Living under Nixon&#39;s America, he was understandably upset with the way the United States was conducting itself and was seriously considering moving to Ghana and dedicating himself to aiding children with disabilities. He even planned a farewell concert to solidify the plan, but Berry Gordy swooped in and convinced him to stay... But I&#39;m sure being offered one of the greatest record deals of all time helped too. When Curtis Mayfield went to work on the soundtrack for Superfly, there was already a decade of films and soundtracks in the blaxploitation genre... the most well known being Shaft. At this point in time, for better or for worse, the genre was known for glorifying drug use and violence in the black community, wiiiiith some badass kung fu, babes, and wild scenarios. Superfly, a movie that was being made by blaxploitation royalty Gordon Parks Jr, was shaping up to mostly follow the formula set for them... but Curtis wanted to show a different side of the story. He grew up around the kinds of people and lifestyles depicted in these movies and he felt that he should show the other side of the life. The soundtrack he made did just that, somehow acting as narrator and juxtaposition to the movie at the same time... Our Beach Boys saga continues today with what some consider the spiritual successor to Pet Sounds... whereas others... really didn&#39;t dig it. With one foot in their classic lighthearted era and one foot firmly in what would become the new wave (with Brian Wilson&#39;s extensive use of synth as a way to simplify production), a lot of people didn&#39;t know what to make of &quot;The Beach Boys Love You&quot;. It was oddly gruffer than their previous output and Brian was back to taking big swings, with the harmonies still popping as they always did. Regardless of how you feel, it is an interesting listen that grows on you and we&#39;re going to talk about it.
