When Curtis Mayfield went to work on the soundtrack for Superfly, there was already a decade of films and soundtracks in the blaxploitation genre... the most well known being Shaft. At this point in time, for better or for worse, the genre was known for glorifying drug use and violence in the black community, wiiiiith some badass kung fu, babes, and wild scenarios. Superfly, a movie that was being made by blaxploitation royalty Gordon Parks Jr, was shaping up to mostly follow the formula set for them... but Curtis wanted to show a different side of the story. He grew up around the kinds of people and lifestyles depicted in these movies and he felt that he should show the other side of the life. The soundtrack he made did just that, somehow acting as narrator and juxtaposition to the movie at the same time... Superfly.
