Codependence can look like loyalty, romance, or “just being a good partner” until you realize it’s costing you your peace. I’m joined by dating, relating, and sex coach Louis Brantmeyer, who brings a sharp, sometimes confrontational lens to a question most of us avoid: are we building love, or are we negotiating for relief from our own discomfort?

We talk about codependence as the tendency to hand your emotional steering wheel to the outside world, then blame a partner when you don’t feel okay. Lewis breaks down what changes when you stop outsourcing your happiness and start practicing a cleaner internal locus of control. We get practical about boundaries, standards, and why “love confronts dysfunction” instead of cushioning it. You’ll also hear a clear roadmap from dependence to codependence to independence to interdependence, plus how triggers and conflict can become data for nervous system healing rather than proof that someone is “wrong.”

Because this show doesn’t dodge sex and intimacy, we also dig into attachment theory and Lewis’s take on polyamory. He challenges the idea that more partners automatically equals more freedom, and offers a different question: does your relationship structure support deeper intimacy and secure attachment, or does it help you keep love at arm’s length?

If you want better dating advice, healthier relationships, and more honest conversations about intimacy, hit subscribe, share this with a friend who needs it, and leave a review. What part of this conversation do you most agree or disagree with?
