Mechanical ventilation is indeed a lifesaving intervention.  However, it is clear that positive pressure ventilation itself has the potential to cause harm.  Novel approaches to ventilation aim to minimise this risk, and one such strategy is the incorporation of oesophageal pressure monitoring.
