55: Bretonnian History Part 1 | Warhammer Old World Lore

In this episode we turn our attention to the dark reflection of Bretonnian nobility, not chaos but the forces of Undeath!. We return to the tale of Merovech d'Mousillon who has risen from his mausoleum  to find it ruled by a Varghulf. We track his progress as he seeks out worthy companions and ultimately sets the brothers Garamont against each other and seals not only his fate but that of a renewed Bretonnia. We then take a look at the tale of the Red Duke. Picking up from the tail end of the crusade against Araby we find the Duke betrayed by his own dukedom of Aquitaine. He returns home after the vampire blood in his veins erases the poison of his betrayal. Finding his Wife dead and his throne usurped. This time around we take a look at the heroines of Bretonnian the magical Damsels and Prophetesses of the grail and a rare female knight of the realm and Duchess. We start with a dive into the magical children of Bretonnia and how there are found, trained and their place in society, we then have a chat about a specific example of this with Élisse Duchaard, the prophetess of Brinne and her place in the world as the apprentice of the Fey Enchantress. Speaking of the Fey Enchantress we take a gander at the high priestess of the Lay, her operations in Bretonnia together with her seemingly iron fisted approach to the nobility. We start by exploring the roles the Grail Knights have in Bretonnian culture and the Virtues they can manifest, each based on one of the 14 madlads who unified the country. Amalric of Gaudaron is our first example of what it means to be a Grail Knight, Renowned as the Bane of the Undead. We delve into the deeds of Bohemond Beastslayer, an amazing knight and terrible judge of character. The Hermit of Malmont, slayer of dragons with monotonous regularly is up next, out of his mind on dragon-wine. We start with a mysterious mystery of the Herrimaults (Eh-ree-Mau) which Cral gets straight away and Dar loses his temper. We explore what it takes to become a Hairy-Mole and what their day to day life is like, their relations with other peasants and their local nobility their Leaders are desperate to hold to account. We turn to the tale of perhaps the most famous of their number, Bertrand the Brigand of Bergerac, and how he is not a total rip off of Robin Hood. We close out the episode by looking at the other extreme of the peasant/noble interaction. We start this episode, eventually, with the return of the Skaven and the devastation the Red Pox has on the peasants and nobles alike. We turn our attention to the Affair of the False Grail and what exactly can go wrong when you claim to be a king, The Siege of Couronne sees the first strong alliance between the Bretonnians and the Elves of Ulthuan. The Dark elves take umbrage at this, attacking first at the command of the Witch King and a second time, The Crusade of Blood, when the witch Elves cut through Bretonnia and their way south. Following on from the unification of Bretonnia by Gilles and his road men, we look at their eventual aging and death as they become legends. Gilles’ son Louis the Rash codifies the Code of Chivalry and we look at the creation of modern-day Bretonnia because of it… mostly turf wars, questing and problems with orcs. We join the Bretonnians on their crusade to free the old world from the forces of Sultan Jaffar (yes, we know) and follow them into Araby proper. We explore the key battles of the crusade and look at the sultan's increasingly chaos allied forces. The time has arrived to look at the most famous Bretonnian of all time, Gilles Le Breton. From his “humble” beginnings as a dragon slayer he quickly forms a crusading army to free the lands of bretonnia from the Greenskins (though the Norscans, Beastmen and Undead make an appearance).. With their first victory banked we follow his ultimate road trip around the dukedoms, freeing each in turn and expanding the Grall Companions each blessed by the Lady of the Lake. We look at the various deeds of each companion and the lengths Bretonnian history goes to to ensure that the companions' armies are never really mentioned. We cast our eyes back to the prehistory of Bretonnia and look at the exodus from the Southlands that led to the land's population and the challenges they faced there… mostly in shades of green. We take a sharp turn and talk about the Reman Empire for the first time and its influence and reason for creation. We then take a further step into the past to the fabled city of Tylos, detailing its rise as an agricultural centre, its friendly trade relations with a wandering Dwarf clan, and its fall through cultural arrogance or perhaps a malign influence from another reality. Ultimately Dhar blows the socks off the lads with a long kept revelation. We continue our cultural introduction to Bretonnia with a view of their relations with other human nations and the Wood Elves of Athel Loren. We then turn to the seas to look at their naval power, ports and their claim to be the greatest sailors in the Old World. Feudal Hierarchy of Bretonnia from the noble ranks of knights to the role (and miserable lot) of Bretonnian serfs. We close out the episode with a dive into the sumptuary laws that the Nobles use to control the serfs and the roles and traditions that protect/oppress the noble women of the land.
