During one major move, the stock gained 118%, or roughly $31,600 on 100 shares. But continuously buying puts to protect those gains could have cost around $5,000, reducing the overall gain by roughly 16%. The problem with hedging is that you're paying for insurance while waiting for something to happen that may never happen.So how do you protect yourself from a stock market crash without constantly paying for insurance?Use the market's own signals.The 10/20/50 EMA strategy provides a simple way to identify trend direction. When the 10 EMA is above the 20 EMA and price is above the 50 EMA, the direction is bullish. When those relationships reverse, the direction is bearish. This doesn't predict the magnitude or duration of a move, but it gives you an objective way to recognize when the trend is changing.The important part is that you don't have to predict the top. You can let the stock continue higher while the trend remains bullish, then get out when the evidence shows that the trend is turning. AMD provides a real example of how this approach can avoid giving away gains through unnecessary hedging.The final piece is trading psychology.You have to stop trying to tell the market what you want it to do and start listening to what the market is actually telling you. SOFI shows what can happen when traders let their conviction and ego override deteriorating price action and moving average signals.The goal isn't to eliminate risk. You can't. With SPY approaching new all-time highs, several important market signals are starting to improve, creating a potentially bullish setup for stocks.The first piece of the puzzle is the 10/20/50 EMA Trend Template. SPY currently has the 10 EMA above the 20 EMA with price above the 50 EMA, showing a bullish trend direction. This doesn't predict how long the trend will last or how far it can run, but it gives us the direction we want to see.Market breadth is also starting to turn higher after months of deterioration. OVTLYR breadth measures bullish versus bearish momentum signals, and the recent improvement suggests more stocks may finally be participating in the move instead of the S&P 500 relying on just a handful of mega-cap stocks.That's where RSP vs. SPY becomes important. SPY is market-cap weighted while RSP is equal weighted. When RSP begins strengthening, it can signal broader participation and less concentration risk. It sounds simple, but it's one of the hardest rules for traders to actually follow.A billion-dollar hedge fund manager drilled this lesson into me years ago, and recent trades provided another real-world reminder of why it matters. I had trading plans in place, predetermined stops, and when those stops were hit, the correct decision was to get out.The key risk management tool in these trades was a half ATR stop.ATR, or Average True Range, measures a stock's typical price movement. Using half an ATR as a stop gives you a defined point where the trade is telling you that something may no longer be working. Earlier this year, I tested tighter stops against a large number of potential setups and found that the half ATR approach was significantly more profitable overall.Why does cutting losses matter so much?Because losses work against you geometrically. A 50% loss requires a 100% gain just to get back to breakeven. The larger the loss becomes, the harder recovery gets. That's why traders need to keep losses small and let winners run.STM, AAOI, VSH, and Cisco provide real examples. Some of these stocks looked strong right before they fell sharply. That's the point. You cannot consistently predict when a stock is about to reverse. You can control how much you lose when it does.For the Outlier Fund, position sizing is also built around risk. The target is 2.5% risk if a trade reaches 2 ATR, while a half ATR stop can allow the position to be closed for substantially less than that maximum risk.The goal isn't to avoid every losing trade. Losing trades are part of trading. Does it keep going, or does the move completely fall apart?The Gap and Go vs. Gap and Crap strategy gives you a simple way to answer that question using a 5 candle pattern. It works across stocks and timeframes and gives you a specific level to watch after a significant gap up.Here's how it works.Start by measuring the gap between the previous day's close and the next day's open. Then mark the low of the gap candle, including the bottom of the wick. That becomes your line in the sand.From there, watch the next three candles.If any of those candles closes below the low of the gap candle, you've got a Gap and Crap. The stock gapped higher but failed to maintain its momentum.If the stock holds above that level and continues moving higher, you've got a Gap and Go. The gap can act like a momentum boost, giving the stock the opportunity to continue higher without getting in its way.There are plenty of real-world examples. Palantir had an 11% gap after earnings before falling below the key level within three candles. Meta produced examples of both Gap and Crap and Gap and Go behavior. Micron had a 9.61% gap that continued higher, while Nvidia and AMD provide additional examples of the pattern in action.The important part is that you can't see the future. You aren't predicting whether the stock will continue higher.
