Beaufort County is a typical southern coastal area with old live oaks dripping with Spanish moss and antebellum architecture. The county incorporates 68 islands that include Port Royal Island, Fripp Island, St. Helena Island, Lady's Island, Parris Island and Hilton Head Island. These are part of the Sea Islands that stretch from South Carolina to upper Florida. Beaufort County sits in the heart of the Lowcountry and Gullah Geechee culture and Civil War sites and historic buildings are very much a part of the area and this has led to ghost stories. Canada had an early park movement that spanned from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Queen's Park in Toronto was one of the parks that came out of that movement. Within it's borders, it holds the magnificent legislative building. The park is encircled by the city that grew up around it and enjoyed by many. Some of those that enjoy the park are doing so in the afterlife. There are at least five spirits that have been encountered at the Legislative Building. Paranormal Conversations are random, off-the-cuff discussions on all things paranormal. On this 28th Paranormal Conversation, we are joined by entrepreneur, founder and CEO of Ghost City Tours and the host of the Ghost City Podcast, Tim Nealon. Tim has a passion and respect for history and a fascination with the paranormal and he has used this to realize his vision of a tour company with integrity and authenticity that hosts hundreds of thousands of guests every year in multiple cities across America. We discussed a variety of things including: Tim's haunted house where he has experienced frequent EVPs, disembodied voices, old-fashioned piano music, recurring shadow figures and a physical encounter with a candle. His property was part of a former plantation and lies along a route associated with Andrew Jackson's movement during the War of 1812 and he has found historical artifacts. We talk about ghost tourism and his company Ghost City Tours and the importance of historical research, accurate storytelling, and respect for the people and communities represented on its tours. It was important for us to differentiate his national company from another national company that seems to be ruining the industry and has been facing litigation.  Discussing what a ghost is takes a down a fascinating road with Tim's speculative theory that consciousness is a universal field received by the brain and that consciousness persists after death, possibly leading to some paranormal encounters. We discuss Jungian synchronicity, simulation theories, and the possibility that investigators' attention or intent contributes to hauntings.  For several years, Tim managed Old South Pittsburg Hospital and he shares some of the experiences people have had with EVPs, disembodied voices, and shadow figures. He also identified one area as having a more negative atmosphere, without labeling it demonic. Tim also shares his most intense experience, which happened at the hospital as well. It's pretty crazy! Kelly had a similar experience at the Exchange Hotel in Virginia with gunpowder smells, a copper taste, and severe tinnitus and Tim proposed that the brain may interpret unusual signals as specific sensory experiences, while acknowledging that the underlying process is not understood. The Thurber House in Columbus, Ohio is a charming home that is now a museum and meeting place for those with literary interests. There is a tragic and haunted history to the abode. The house sits on the outer border of the former Central Ohio Lunatic Asylum, which burned down in 1868, killing seven women in the fire. Jeweler Thomas Tracy Tress accidentally shot and killed himself in the house when he lived here. Writer, humorist and cartoonist James Thurber lived in the house for a time and he had a ghostly experience that he wrote about. Spirits do seem to knock about the place. Maitland Gaol has a reputation of being Australia's hardest jail. For nearly thirty years the gaol has stood empty, but for 150 years this jail housed some of Australia's worst criminals. Canada is home to some great haunts and Toronto is one of those cities harboring several locations with ghosts stories. Norwich State Hospital in Connecticut served as a home and place of treatment for the mentally ill for a hundred years. As is the case with many old insane asylums, treatment methods were arcane and in some cases torturous. Mental illness was not understood and people were mistreated years ago.
