We've arrived at the beginning of the end — in the best possible way. This episode kicks off the final five-episode arc of From Betrayal to Breakthrough, and Dr. Debi is taking us back to where it all started.
In this deeply personal solo episode, Dr. Debi shares the real story behind why she started this podcast almost 500 episodes ago — and it's not the reason most people assume. She opens up about meeting incredible people through networking and business relationships and wanting a way to give back, which sparked the original idea for the show. But the deeper reason came later: her own betrayal, first within her family and then in her marriage, and her belief that once you've found your way through something painful, you owe it to the world to share what you've learned.
Dr. Debi walks through how that belief led her, at 50 years old with four kids, six dogs, and a full-time business, to enroll in a PhD program in transpersonal psychology with one goal: to understand betrayal well enough to heal from it. She describes the qualitative research she conducted — studying the before, during, and after of betrayal on a physical, mental, and emotional level — and the three discoveries that came out of it:
-
Betrayal is a distinct type of trauma that requires its own path to healing — it isn't the same as other trauma.
-
There is a common cluster of physical, mental, and emotional symptoms tied to betrayal, now known as Post Betrayal Syndrome® (PBS®).
-
While people can stay stuck for years, decades, or a lifetime, full healing moves through five proven, predictable stages — The Five Stages of Betrayal Recovery™.
From there, Dr. Debi traces how that research became a certification program, and how the certification program became The PBT Institute — now recognized as the world's leading organization devoted to betrayal recovery research, education, and transformation, with Dr. Debi established as the world's leading expert on how unhealed betrayal and shattered trust impacts human performance.
She also shares the pivotal, vulnerable moment in a mastermind group when her coach called her out for "hiding behind her study" — and how that pushed her to start sharing her own story publicly instead of just the research. That included the honest truth about her marriage: it fell apart, and later, she and her husband chose to rebuild it intentionally, remarrying each other with new rings, new vows, a new dress, and their four kids standing up as their bridal party.
Dr. Debi reflects on what she calls "trauma well served" — the idea that while we can't undo what happened to us, we get to decide what we do with it, and that the people a few steps ahead on the healing path are often exactly who someone else needs to see it's possible. She closes with a preview of what's ahead in these final episodes: a best-of episode featuring highlights from nearly 500 shows, an episode with certified PBT coaches, a listener appreciation episode, and finally, Episode 500.
