Lara Krinsky opens this IDF Live briefing with Shalom Ben Hanan, a nearly three-decade Shin Bet veteran who returned from retirement after October 7th to help interrogate captured Hamas terrorists, for a discussion about the threats Israel sees—and the catastrophes its intelligence services quietly prevent. Ben Hanan argues another confrontation with Iran may ultimately be unavoidable if Tehran refuses to abandon its nuclear ambitions, warning that the regime is rebuilding missile capabilities while simultaneously pursuing assassination plots and low-signature terrorist operations around the world. Discussing the near-disaster aboard the recent Dubai–Tel Aviv flight, he says the copilot was a lone-wolf radical rather than a directly controlled operative, but stresses that decentralized radicalization can still serve Iran’s interests and exposes dangerous vulnerabilities that intelligence services must detect before an attacker acts. He describes human intelligence as the “queen of the battlefield,” arguing that October 7th exposed the cost of insufficient HUMINT inside Hamas and explaining how informants, interrogations, psychological insight, and seemingly minor human observations can reveal threats that even sophisticated technology misses. Reflecting on interrogations after October 7th, Ben Hanan says many captured Hamas terrorists did not perceive themselves as defeated at all, because within their radical Islamist worldview carrying out the massacre fulfilled their role regardless of whether they were later imprisoned or killed—a mindset he says Western observers struggle to comprehend. He closes by warning that Israel still has unfinished work in Gaza, Iran, Lebanon, and potentially Judea and Samaria, while emphasizing that Israel is nevertheless in a far stronger security position today and that sustained support—including mental-health and rehabilitation care for those carrying the invisible costs of service—is essential to finishing the job.
