He has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopedics at UCSD and podiatric residency director since 1984 (1st at Hillside hospital and now at Scripps Mercy Hospital.) He is board certified in podiatric surgery as well as podiatric biomechanics. Dr. Green's interests are in foot mechanics, pediatric foot care (children and infants), podiatric surgery, and general podiatric care. Dean's Chat hosts Drs. Jeffrey Jensen and Johanna Richey are joined by Dr. Douglas Richie, a leader in pioneering standards in biomechanics and sports medicine. Dr. Richie earned a doctorate in podiatric medicine at the California College of Podiatric Medicine and then completed a residency in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery at Western Medical Center in Orange County, California. Dr. Richie established a private practice located in Seal Beach California which eventually expanded to two locations with three full time podiatric physician partners. Dr. Richie’s clinical and academic interests have focused on applied biomechanics, sports medicine and orthotic therapy. He has over 30 peer reviewed publications, has authored several chapters in several medical textbooks and recently wrote his own textbook titled “Pathomechanics of Common Foot Disorders”, published by Springer-Nature. Dr. Richie holds four United States patents on various designs of footwear and foot orthoses. In 1996, he designed and launched a new innovative ankle-foot orthosis which bears his name and is currently marketed in six countries, worldwide. Dr. Richie is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and is a Fellow and Past President of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine. He is presently an Associate Clinical Professor at the California School of Podiatric Medicine at Samuel Merritt University. Chat hosts Drs. Jeffrey Jensen and Johanna Richey are joined by 2024 Olympian, Derrick Mein. Derrick just returned home from Paris fresh off his 5th place finish in Men's Trapshooting. "Derrick grew up on a small farm in southeast Kansas and developed a love of the outdoors at an early age tagging along with his dad while quail and deer hunting. He started in sporting clays at age eight, joining his dad in a small league at a local club and began developing his skills as a competitive shooter. The shooting sports earned him a scholarship to Lindenwood University. While there, he was on dual scholarship for baseball and the shotgun team. After a couple years, he transferred to Kansas State University to pursue a degree in Animal Science, graduating in 2008. While at KSU, he won the ACUI Collegiate Clay Target Championship, a format that includes international trap, international skeet, American skeet, American trap, and sporting clays. After college, he moved to Ohio where he designed and managed Cardinal Center Sporting Clays. Having successfully getting the facility up and going, he took the chance to move closer to home to manage Powder Creek Shooting Park in Lenexa, Kansas. During his years in the shooting sports, Derrick has competed in many different disciplines, including sporting clays, skeet, trap, international trap, and helice, winning national titles and earning Team USA honors in helice, international trap, and sporting clays. Still to this day, Derrick enjoys shooting with his father and is regularly seen competing with him around the country in sporting clay events. Derrick has eight International medals to date and competed in his second Olympic Games in Paris. In this episode we explore the passion for excellence that transcends all careers. We discuss work/life balance, planning, preparation, execution, the mental game, how to deal with disappointment, how to "finish", and Derrick's plans for 2028. Today's discussion is fascinating, as we delve into the mindset, idea generation, priorities, personality and inquisitiveness that have enabled Dr. Lavery, over the past 30 years, to be a world expert in researching the diabetic foot.  Lawrence A. Lavery is transitioning to a new role to enhance his incredible research career, A former Professor in the Department of Plastic Surgery, as well as Director of Clinical Research, at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, he is now moving to the University of Texas, San Antonio.  His research group has published 320 peer reviewed papers and has received extramural funding from the Veterans Administration, National Institute of Health, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, American Diabetes Association, and the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.    Dr. Lavery’s H-Index is 108.  This means that Dr. Lavery has 108 publications that have each been sited over 108 times in other peer reviewed papers.
