EPISODE #93 - For years Brian May & Friends’ “Star Fleet Project” was this elusive rare EP that floated about in used record store bins flying under the radar. But this three-song, 27-minute gem had precious cargo as it featured the one time union of two guitar gods: Brian May of Queen and Edward Van Halen of Van Halen, who played together side-by-side backed by bassist Phil Chen (Jeff Beck, Rod Stewart), drummer Alan Gratzer (REO Speedwagon) and keyboardist Fred Mandel (Alice Cooper, Queen). In wake of both Chen and EVH’s passing, May decided to compile a box set of all the studio outtakes and jams from the two-day recording period in 1983 called “Star Fleet Sessions.” The Daves do a deep dive discussion about the golden nuggets of Eddie’s masterful playing on this long-awaited release that is truly a gift for all Van Halen fans to cherish.
