Episode 64: Effective Communication with Athletes with Jack Mullaney
In this episode of the “All Things Endurance Podcast,” host Rick Prince chats with Jack Mullaney, head coach and executive director of the HOKA Northern Arizona Elite running team. In this episode, Jack discusses what it means to communicate effectively with athletes.
Specifically, Rick and Jack cover the following topics:
1. Could you tell our listeners a bit more about yourself?
2. Your job is working with elite and professional runners. Are there any large differences between communicating with elite runners and the rest of us mere mortals?
3. Oftentimes, coaching puts an emphasis on programming and physiology while soft skills take a back seat. Where would you rank soft skills in relation to hard skills such as programming, testing and biomechanics?
4. When is the right time to receive and provide feedback after an athlete’s race didn’t go as expected or planned?
5. Coaching often requires having hard conversations with athletes. Do you have any tips for this?
6. How do you communicate with an athlete who disagrees with your programming or race selection?
7. If you find that an athlete is not following the programming that you prescribed, what is your approach and strategy to communicate with them?
8. Are there any situations or conditions where you would say that a coach should cease working with an athlete or vice versa?
9. Do you have any tips on how to best motivate athletes?
10. At the symposium, one of the topics we discussed was how to meet athletes halfway to get what you want out of them as a coach, but also to meet their needs. Could you discuss this a bit more and perhaps share an example?
