Today I’m joined by Matt Foot, a criminal defence solicitor and Co-Director of APPEAL a legal charity that fights wrongful convictions as we discuss some of the cases that have raised serious questions about our criminal justice system. We begin with Sam Hallam, who was just seventeen when he was convicted of murder. He spent seven years in prison before his conviction was quashed, and Matt represented him in the fight to clear his name. We also talk about other major cases Matt has been involved in, including that of Andy Malkinson, who spent seventeen years in prison for a rape he did not commit before his conviction was overturned. On 26 October at 9pm watch Matt as he discusses the Sam Hallam case as part of the Crime & Investigation series 'Convictions Gone Bad with Will Mellor'.These cases raise difficult questions about how innocent people can be convicted, the devastating impact of wrongful imprisonment, and what happens when someone tries to challenge a conviction and prove their innocence. It’s a fascinating and important conversation with someone who has worked at the heart of some of the UK’s most significant miscarriage of justice cases.Convictions Gone Bad with Will Mellor airs on Mondays at 9pm weekly exclusively on CRIME+INVESTIGATION.The Sam Hallam case airs on 26 October at 9pm as part of this series.Find out more about Matt's charity APPEALhttps://appeal.org.uk/I release episodes of the UK True Crime podcast every Tuesday and Friday, so please join me for the next episode on Tuesday.Find out more about me, Adam Lloyd, & UK True Crimehttps://uktruecrime.comSupport me at Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/UKTrueCrimeBuy Me a Coffeehttps://buymeacoffee.com/uktruecrimepodcastWatch my YouTube Channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@Adam-uktruecrime/videosJoin UK True Crime Facebook Grouphttps://www.facebook.com/groups/UKTrueCrimeGot 5 mins? In almost ten years of making the UK True Crime Podcast, I’ve only covered male victims of domestic abuse once before. The vast majority of domestic abuse victims are women abused by men, and that reality should never be overlooked. But in this episode I wanted to tell the stories of two men who suffered horrific abuse at the hands of their female partners. Both cases are deeply upsetting, and both men faced enormous difficulties in speaking out and being believed. I think it’s important to recognise that domestic abuse can happen to anyone, and that every victim deserves to be heard, supported and protected, regardless of their gender.ManKind Initiative (help for male victims of domestic abuse)https://mankind.org.uk/Refuge (supporting those suffering domestic abuse)https://refuge.org.uk/I release new episodes of the UK True Crime Podcast every Tuesday and Friday, so please do join me for the next story on Tuesday.Writing credit:Gemma GouldFind out more about me, Adam Lloyd, & UK True Crimehttps://uktruecrime.comSupport me at Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/UKTrueCrimeBuy Me a Coffeehttps://buymeacoffee.com/uktruecrimepodcastWatch my YouTube Channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@Adam-uktruecrime/videosJoin UK True Crime Facebook Grouphttps://www.facebook.com/groups/UKTrueCrimeGot 5 mins? In this episode from Sunderland, I tell the story of Barry Sewell, a man whose life became caught up in a rumour with devastating consequences. The case raises important questions about the dangers of unsubstantiated allegations, how quickly rumours can spread, and what happens when people decide to take the law into their own hands. When does suspicion turn into vigilantism, and what happens when people decide they can act as judge and jury?I release new episodes of the UK True Crime Podcast every Tuesday and Friday, so please do join me for the next story on Friday.Find out more about me, Adam Lloyd, & UK True Crimehttps://uktruecrime.comSupport me at Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/UKTrueCrimeBuy Me a Coffeehttps://buymeacoffee.com/uktruecrimepodcastWatch my YouTube Channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@Adam-uktruecrime/videosJoin UK True Crime Facebook Grouphttps://www.facebook.com/groups/UKTrueCrimeGot 5 mins? In this episode, I’m joined by one of my real true crime heroes in Tom Wood, a retired senior police officer who spent almost 40 years in policing, working on some of Scotland’s most significant murder investigations.Tom has worked on some of Scotland’s most infamous murders and was Officer in Overall Command of a national investigation into the murders of five young Scottish women in the 1970s, including the deaths of Edinburgh girls Helen Scott and Christine Eadie, the notorious ‘Worlds End Murders’, which he wrote about in his book that was published in 2024.Tom is now a successful true crime author, sharing his experiences and knowledge through his writing. And as you’ll discover, he is a brilliant storyteller, sharing his experience and fascinating insights into the realities of investigating serious crime. We had far too little time to cover everything I wanted to ask him, but I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation and could happily have carried on for hours.Buy Tom's new bookhttps://www.tomwoodwriter.co.uk/books.I release episodes of the UK True Crime podcast every Tuesday and Friday, so please join me for the next episode on Tuesday.Find out more about me, Adam Lloyd, & UK True Crimehttps://uktruecrime.comSupport me at Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/UKTrueCrimeBuy Me a Coffeehttps://buymeacoffee.com/uktruecrimepodcastWatch my YouTube Channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@Adam-uktruecrime/videosJoin UK True Crime Facebook Grouphttps://www.facebook.com/groups/UKTrueCrimeGot 5 mins? A gang of armed robbers terrorised Bristol for more than a year, targeting banks, building societies and post offices with shotguns and other weapons. But how did they operate, and how did police finally bring them down? In this episode, I look at the robberies, the victims and the remarkable covert operation that eventually led to the gang's arrest and imprisonment - it is quite a story.I release brand new episodes of the UK True Crime Podcast every Tuesday and Friday, so please do join me for the next story on Tuesday.Writing Credit: Chris WoodYou can buy Chris's second book, 'Death in the Theatre' here: https://www.amazon.com/Death-Theatre-Chris-Wood/dp/1399009117Find out more about me, Adam Lloyd, & UK True Crimehttps://uktruecrime.comSupport me at Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/UKTrueCrimeBuy Me a Coffeehttps://buymeacoffee.com/uktruecrimepodcastWatch my YouTube Channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@Adam-uktruecrime/videosJoin UK True Crime Facebook Grouphttps://www.facebook.com/groups/UKTrueCrimeGot 5 mins? Very occasionally, I recommend a podcast series to you and this is a show I have found really interesting and I hope you will too. This is episode one of Rough Diamond, the new true crime series from Always True Crime. NOTE: I haven't been paid to promote this podcastIt starts in the 1960s when London was in the grips of a crime spree…rare diamonds are being stolen. The latest is the Colenso diamond. It’s the world’s largest uncut diamond and one of the Natural History Museum’s most important pieces. When a young window cleaner is arrested a few months after the theft, his family is thrown into turmoil. David Knight will protest his innocence until the day he dies, but it’s the start of a much bigger story. Listen to the rest of the seriesYou can listen to the next episode by searching for Rough Diamond in any podcast app or go to http://alwaystruecrime.comAbout UK True CrimeI release new episodes of the UK True Crime Podcast every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, so please do join me for the next story on Friday.Find out more about me, Adam Lloyd, & UK True Crimehttps://uktruecrime.comSupport me at Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/UKTrueCrimeBuy Me a Coffeehttps://buymeacoffee.com/uktruecrimepodcastWatch my YouTube Channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@Adam-uktruecrime/videosJoin UK True Crime Facebook Grouphttps://www.facebook.com/groups/UKTrueCrimeGot 5 mins?
