    126. Opposing Views: Climate Change | Alex Epstein & Dr. Andrew Dessler

This episode is sponsored by - - Paleo Valley Beef sticks - go to https://paleovalley.com/ and enter code MP for 15% off your first order. - Rabbit Air Purifiers - go to https://www.rabbitair.com/ for quality air purifiers. In this episode of Opposing Views, I was joined by Alex Epstein and Dr. Andrew Dessler to discuss climate change. Alex Epstein is a philosopher, author, and founder of the Center for Industrial Progress. His NYT bestseller The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels argued that human flourishing actually requires the use of fossil fuels. Dr. Andrew Dessler is a professor of Atmospheric Sciences at Texas A&M. He wrote The Science and Politics of Global Climate Change: A Guide to the Debate, explaining how science is (mis)used in politics. - Find more Alex Epstein on Twitter @AlexEpstein https://twitter.com/AlexEpstein Follow Dr. Andrew Dessler on Twitter @AndrewDessler https://twitter.com/AndrewDessler or find his book Introduction to Modern Climate Change at http://andrewdessler.com ___ [0:00] Intro [04:25] Intro to Alex Epstein [05:50] Epstein's views on climate change and the impact of humans [07:15] “The current benefits of burning fossil fuels outweigh the negative side effects" Alex Epstein [09:30] Should we be transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy? [11:20] “The modern anti-fossil fuel movement that says that rising CO2 levels are an existential threat, deliberately excludes nuclear and hydro. Why is that? It's my view that this is philosophical, [that some energies are seen as more natural,] and that's why they favor certain renewables and exclude others" Epstein [12:00] “There's this idea that human impact is bad and we have to stop it, and that's a philosophical view. I think our goal should be to advance human flourishing" Epstein [14:41] On the modern environmental movement, "it's all about the morality of eliminating human impact, and not at all about actually being concerned with reliable energy" - Epstein [15:28] What caused the Texas 2021 power grid failure? [17:31] “Wind dies down when it's cold most of the time and when it's really hot and that is part of why it's a very bad source of energy" - Epstein [19:00] Is natural gas subsidised by the government? [20:29] Climate-related disaster deaths are actually down 98% in the last hundred years. So we are actually safer from climate than ever" - Epstein [22:40] What is the validity of the claim that rising CO2 levels are going to lead to more human deaths through natural disasters? [23:02] “We should only trust predictions about the future from people that acknowledge the reality of the present" - Epstein [26:10] Epstein's views on carbon taxes and who really is producing the most CO2 [28:14] Is Alex an industry plant advocate? [29:06] What impact that humans have made is worse for us and the planet so far? [32:51] ”Anybody that thinks nature is their friend hasn't seen horse flies in Canada. They shouldn’t exist—they’re huge and bite chunks out of you" Mikhaila Peterson [34:37] Wrapping up with Alex Epstein [41:32] Introducing the second guest - Dr. Andrew Dessler [42:47] Is climate change real? What are the primary causes? [43:03] “Climate change is definitely occurring, I think there's very little argument of that at this point" Dessler [44:00] “Carbon dioxide since pre-industrial (or before 1750) when humans started burning fossil fuels, has gone up [by] 40%, and that’s entirely due to human activity" Dessler [45:15] What’s the best way to stop or slow climate change? [46:37] Are green energy sources more expensive for the consumer? [48:45] “There is no reason to continue a fossil fuel economy except for the power that fossil fuel producers have in our political position" Dessler [49:20] Is nuclear power viable? [50:35] What caused the Texas 2021 power grid failures? [53:15] What about claims that carbon taxes will mostly impact the middle and lower class in America, making them less financially stable? [57:50] “There are some businesses where the very rich owners are not going to be able to recover from switching off of fossil fuels and those are the people who object" Dessler [58:00] What % of bad CO2 emissions are coming from America? Are we the bad guys in terms of CO2 produced? [01:00:15] Is renewable energy easy to store? [01:05:00] Is climate change responsible for the natural disasters in recent years? [01:10:06] What happens if we really put all our efforts behind switching to renewable energy now? [01:11:30] Climate change is no laughing matter [01:13:48] Which countries are doing the best to combat climate change? - https://skepticalscience.com/ [01:18:45] Using hydrogen fuel cells to store energy [01:20:05] Most renewable energy source? [01:21:50] Wrapping up with Dr. Dessler - https://skepticalscience.com/ [01:22:00] The question is not ‘were fossil fuels good’—of course they were. The question is what future do we want to live in?" Dessler #CO2 #ClimateChange #FossilFuels

    124. Opposing Views: Is Bitcoin The Future? | Peter Schiff & Robert Breedlove

    1:43:57

This episode is sponsored by NordVPN, go to https://nordvpn.com/TMPP and use code TMPP for 73% off + a bonus gift! In this episode of Opposing Views, I was joined by Peter Schiff and Robert Breedlove to discuss Bitcoin. We covered a range of topics like decentralization, the US dollar, and the risks involved with cryptocurrencies becoming increasingly popular. Both guests gave their opinion on whether Bitcoin is better than gold as a value standard - a prickly question because you have to consider, among other things, market forces, security, scarcity, inflation, and the potential for a new financial crisis. Peter Schiff is an American economist, stockbroker, financial commentator, and author. He is one of the few unbiased investment advisors (not committed solely to the short side of the market) to have correctly predicted the current bear market and to have positioned his clients accordingly. He's also renowned for his accurate forecasts on the US stock market and economy, as well as the mortgage meltdown, credit crunch, and subprime debacle. Schiff is the CEO and chief global strategist of Euro Pacific Capital Inc. You may also recognize him as a frequent guest on national news or as the host of the Peter Schiff Show Podcast. Robert Breedlove is an ex-hedge fund manager, philosopher, podcaster, and advocate of cryptocurrencies - especially Bitcoin. He describes himself as a freedom maximalist whose mission is to "cast light on the corruption of money." Breedlove is the CEO and founder of Bitcoin consulting firm Parallax Digital. He also hosts the "What is Money?" show, where he engages in deep conversations with some of the world's most prolific thinkers. [09:42] Is cryptocurrency partially responsible for the inflation of the US dollar? [13:02] Is there a way to make crypto a practical, spendable currency for the average person? [13:17] “The real case use for any cryptocurrency right now is as a gambling token. People don't buy it to spend it, they buy it as an investment to see it appreciate in value." - Peter Schiff [18:44] Would Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency be a viable solution for a country with an unstable fiat currency to control inflation? [24:44] Exploring the possibility of a gold standard cryptocurrency [27:50] Peter Shiff's advice for people considering Bitcoin as an investment [41:09] What value does Shiff place on the decentralized aspect of Bitcoin's construction, not needing a governing center to regulate supply through inflation [43:05] “People thought they were going to get rich off of beanie babies. Once you get in a bubble you stop seeing reality.” - Peter Schiff [46:52] Wrapping up with first guest Peter Shiff [52:12] This episode is sponsored by NordVPN, go to https://nordvpn.com/TMPP and use code TMPP for 73% off + a bonus gift! [53:51] Introducing the second guest Robert Breedlove [55:12] What Bitcoin is from Breedlove’s perspective. Is Bitcoin at a disadvantage not being a physical item like gold, which can be used for its physical properties? [01:01:23] How did we transition from gold to paper money? [01:06:53] Why does Bitcoin not need to backing by something like a gold standard? [01:09:18] History of the US gold standard in the 20th century [01:13:47] Volatility of Bitcoin, a serious problem? [01:17:37] “The complex relationship of humanity to money, this is the one lesson we keep having to learn again painfully. Every three generations we seem to forget that we can't print money to solve our problems.” - Robert Breedlove [01:18:30] What is Robert's stance on the future of Bitcoin? [01:23:18] How can people use Bitcoin effectively for real-life transactions? [01:26:25] What are the fees associated with using Bitcoin networks for transactions? [01:30:05] Robert Breedlove's opinion on the effects of inflation on the US economy in coming years [01:33:50] “Fiat Currency is a pyramid scheme. Those with access to the recently printed money first get rich at the expense of those who get it later and last.” - Robert Breedlove [01:36:32] Examining the possibility of governmental regulation of Bitcoin transactions [01:39:22] Are the beginning stages of Bitcoin really only reasonably accessible to a certain group of people? [01:42:30] How does Breedlove feel about cryptocurrencies like Ethereum? 123. How Men Can Instantly Look More Attractive | Tanner Guzy

    53:45

In this episode, I spoke with men's style coach Tanner Guzy. With the focus on male fashion shifting dramatically over the last few decades, Tanner thinks a lot of men need a sense of direction, and that finding a style of one’s own is an essential part of self-expression. In Tanner’s words, there’s a need for “aesthetic literacy” that isn’t quite being fulfilled. We covered several topics related to men's fashion, such as how personality is expressed through style. We talked about suits and shoes. The changing aesthetic of Western culture and masculinity. The three archetypes of male fashion: rugged, refined, and rakish. We also went into short tangents about Guzy's personal life, his joys as a father, and his time spent as a missionary for the Church of Latter-day Saints. Tanner Guzy is a men's style coach, author, and TEDx speaker. His goal is to help boost men’s confidence and attractiveness by upping their fashion game. He is the author of The Appearance of Power: How Masculinity is Expressed Through Aesthetics. [04:55] Are there any “absolutely-no" moments when it comes to style and fashion? [18:00] Mikhaila and Tanner go on a tangent about Guzy’s missionary work as a Latter-Day Saint [21:30] Discussing the three style archetypes in men: rugged, refined, and rakish [23:30] “As you start to dress in a way that reflects the way you feel on the inside, when you look in the mirror it's incredibly congruent and authentic to what you feel your style is.” - Tanner Guzy [25:30] Dressing around certain troublesome parts of the body [26:50] What shoes are a no-go zone for men in 2021? [29:00] Recommendations on good outfits for a first date [32:30] “If you ever see an older guy who is dressed like he is eighteen, it's because his wife is dressing him. 122. Opposing Views: Gun Control | Dan Gross & Dr. John R. Lott

    1:26:17

Welcome to episode 122 of the Mikhaila Peterson Podcast. This is another opposing views episode where I speak with two people who have opposing views on contentious subjects. This is my favourite format of episode and one I’ll be focusing on. In this episode, I spoke with Dan Gross and Dr. John R. Lott about gun control in America. We discussed their stances on gun control, assault weapons, the gun show loophole, and background check laws. I asked them whether states with stricter gun control have less gun violence. We also touched on straw purchasers, misconceptions regarding gun violence, and how politics has pervaded an already complicated debate—which is one of the reasons we need conversations like this one. In the first half, I sat down with Dan Gross. After his brother was wounded in the 1997 Empire State shooting, Gross left a bright career in marketing to become a gun control activist. He has since worked to raise awareness on gun safety, spearheading campaigns that teach gun owners to mitigate risk. Gross is the former president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and co-founded the Center for Gun Rights and Responsibility. In the second half, I spoke with gun rights advocate, economist, and political commentator John R. Lott. He has worked for Yale, the University of Chicago, and the U.S. Department of Justice under Trump. He is the founder and former president of the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC). John Lott has published op-eds in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and more. Remember please keep the comments civil - organizing these episodes is tricky and I really love doing them I think they’re so interesting so let’s keep things civil so that more people will agree to come on. Next week's episode is opposing views on Bitcoin. I hope you enjoy this episode - if you do please hit subscribe. Enjoy your week!
