Internationalism and Higher Education - A conversation with Professor Priscilla Dunk-West

We can all have a good research year.  Maybe two.  But this week, Priscilla and Tara explore what a sustained research career looks like - and how to create one.

The Significant Original Contribution to Knowledge is the defining attribute of a PhD.  But how is it created?  This week, Suz and Tara talk about how a SOCK is built - and formed.

Internationalism is so important to life, universities and the development of knowledge.  This week, Priscilla and Tara talk about the gift and power of internationalization, even - particularly - in xenophobic times.

Tara talks with her friend and colleague Emily Wong, from Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, about her recently published article, "Reactive Protection: Building Child-Save Systems for Hong Kong's Future." It is a great provocation of an article, transforming our thinking about the rights of children, and the daily and institutional care for the child. Inspirational. What does it mean to have a career 'break'?  What is a career 'interruption'?  Professor Priscilla Dunk-West and I talk about the idea of 'interruption' - and what we learn about a working life through it... And - indeed - a life...

This week, Tara and Suzanne talk about that pivotal decision.  The decision to do a doctorate.  How is that decision made, and what information is required to make it?

How does an individual, collective and community transform in tough times? Kelly and Tara talk about how infrastructures of care can transform individuals and their relationships with the world. This is a delicate conversation about land, gardens and encounters beyond 'the human.' Let's talk about collectives of care. Interviews and surveys are common in qualitative research. But Suzanne has constructed her interviews in a completely original way. Multimodal.  Textured.  This week, we talk about the role of silence in interviews.  How do we understand and value silence?  How do we render it meaningful in research?

This week, Suzanne and Tara talk about interviewing in research. In qualitative methods, it often seems a default strategy for data collection. Suzanne talks about how she approached interviews through a different lens.

Our needs and goals are - so frequently - marginalized to enable the life and career of others.  How do we transform this balance between our aims and hopes - and the imperatives of others?
