60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey: Even Seasoned Podcast Hosts & Guests Can Miss the Mark on Etiquette
Hello to you listening in Brno, a city in the Czech Republic!
Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga.
Even the best of us could use a refresher when it comes to sharing the podcast mic. After almost 5 years on the airwaves I have a few tips for hosts and guests alike.
Hosts
✓ Prepare your guest ahead of time with agreed-upon topics and talking points
✓ Treat your guest with dignity and respect; they’re providing their time and expertise - for free
✓ Deeply listen to your guest with appreciation
✓ Do not belittle, humiliate or personally challenge your guest
✓ Avoid offering unsolicited advice, criticism or unexpected questions to show how smart you are or to impress your listeners
Guests
✓ Timely provide all the requested details to the host
✓ Show up ahead of time prepared and ready to do your very best in service to the listeners
✓ Be respectful, polite and professional when you share the mic
✓ Answer questions in a clear, concise manner; sometimes less is more
✓ You have the right to ask the host to edit out any material you don’t want aired. The host has a duty to respect your request - no questions asked. If the host declines to make the edits you are well within your rights to stop the episode from being aired.
Above all, let’s enjoy what we’re doing, sharing a conversation with another human being for the benefit of people we don’t know and may never meet. As I always say “Each One Lift One” is the way we roll here!
Question: What other valuable tips can you share from your podcasting experience?
You’re always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe and spread the word with a generous 5-star review and comment - it helps us all - and join us next time!
