Les agriculteurs font partie des catégories socio-professionnelles les plus touchées par les problèmes de santé mentale dans l’Union européenne. Les raisons sont multiples et tiennent bien sûr aux particularités d’un métier soumis aux aléas du vivant : longues journées de travail, rares vacances, isolement, solitude non désirée... Des facteurs de stress auxquels peuvent s’ajouter des soucis financiers et des tâches administratives complexes et chronophages. Sans parler du manque de reconnaissance et des attentes sociétales en perpétuelle évolution. Le 54ème épisode de Nourrir l’Europe s’empare du sujet. Peter Hynes, producteur laitier irlandais, brise le silence et témoigne sur son combat contre la dépression. Maria Gafo, cheffe adjointe de l'unité « Durabilité sociale » à la Direction générale de l'agriculture et du développement rural de la Commission européenne, dresse un état des lieux des souffrances psychiques à l’échelle de l’UE et aborde les solutions proposées aux Etats-membres pour venir en aide à leurs agriculteurs et aux habitants des zones rurales. Deux chercheurs partagent les résultats de leurs travaux sur la santé mentale des agriculteurs : David Meridith, chef du département de l'économie agroalimentaire et de l'analyse spatiale à l'Autorité irlandaise pour le développement de l'agriculture et de l'alimentation, et Peter Lundqvist, professeur à l'Université suédoise des sciences agricoles.

Dieses Mal geht es um ein ernstes Thema, das wie ein Schatten über der Existenz vieler Landwirte hängt: psychische Probleme wie Depressionen, Burn-out oder Schlimmeres. In vielen europäischen Ländern gehören die Landwirte zu den Berufsgruppen mit den meisten psychischen Problemen. Die Gründe sind vielfältig: sehr lange Arbeitszeiten, finanzielle Sorgen, Isolation, Einsamkeit, Verwaltungsaufwand, Klimawandel und viele andere. Nicht zuletzt geht es auch um die Frage, was die Öffentlichkeit heutzutage von den Landwirten erwartet, und was diese Erwartungen für die Identität der Landwirte bedeuten. Gleichzeitig kann man einiges tun – und die Europäische Kommission kümmert sich um das Problem. Unsre Gäste sind diesmal Maria Gafo, Leiterin des Referats „Soziale Nachhaltigkeit“ in der Generaldirektion Landwirtschaft und ländliche Entwicklung der Europäischen Kommission; David Meridith, Leiter der Abteilung für Agrar- und Ernährungs-wirtschaft und räumliche Analysen bei der irischen Landwirtschafts- und Ernährungs-Entwicklungs-Behörde; Peter Lundqvist, Professor an der Schwedischen Universität für Agrarwissenschaften und Peter Hynes, ein Landwirt aus Irland, der selbst mit psychischen Schwierigkeiten zu kämpfen hatte.

In Episode 54 of 'Food for Europe!' we'll be discussing mental health in agriculture. Long working hours, financial worries, isolation and loneliness, are among the many reasons farmers are struggling. That leaves us to ask: What does it mean to be a farmer in today's world? At the same time, there is a lot that can be done – and the European Commission is aware of the problem. Our guests this time are Maria Gafo, Head of the Social Sustainability Unit at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development; David Meridith, Head of Agri-Food and Spatial Analysis at the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority; Peter Lundqvist, a professor at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, and Peter Hynes, a farmer from Ireland who has struggled with mental health issues.

Vom 1. Januar bis Ende Juni 2025 hat Polen den Vorsitz im Rat der Europäischen Union inne. Die Gelegenheit für „Nahrung Europa“, sich für seine Landwirtschaft zu interessieren. Seit dem EU-Beitritt Polens vor 21 Jahren hat sich der ländliche Raum in Polen grundlegend verändert. Durch die Beihilfen und Standards der Gemeinsamen Agrarpolitik hat sich die durchschnittliche Größe der landwirtschaftlichen Betriebe erhöht, die Landwirte haben sich spezialisiert und ihre Produktionen haben die Läden und Märkte der EU erobert. Ergebnis: Im Jahr 2023 war Polen nach Frankreich, Deutschland, Italien und Spanien der fünftgrößte Beitragszahler zum europäischen Agrarsektor. In der 53. Folge unseres Podcasts spricht Jacek Zarzecki, Rinderzüchter und Experte bei der Europäischen Kommission, über seinen Sektor, seine Stärken, aber auch seine Schwächen und Sorgen. Schließlich geht Arkadiusz Mazur, Programmbeauftragter in der Generaldirektion Landwirtschaft und ländliche Entwicklung der Europäischen Kommission, auf die strukturellen Entwicklungen in der Landwirtschaft seines Landes in der Europäischen Union ein.

Since January 1st, Poland has held the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union. So, this is an opportunity for Food for Europe to focus on the Polish agricultural sector. Polish farming has undergone profound changes since the country joined the EU 21 years ago. Under the EU's Common Agricultural Policy, the average size of farms has increased, farmers are specializing more, and their products have conquered the shelves of the common market. As a result, in 2023, Poland was the fifth largest contributor to the European agricultural sector, behind France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. In the 53rd episode of the podcast dedicated to agriculture, farming and food, Jacek Zarzecki, a cattle breeder and expert with the European Commission, talks to us about his sector, its strengths, but also its weaknesses and industry concerns. Magdalena Nowicka, Deputy Director of the Direct Payments Department at the Polish Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, discusses measures to cut red tape implemented by her teams. Depuis le 1er janvier, la Pologne occupe la présidence tournante du Conseil de L’Union européenne. L’occasion pour Nourrir L’Europe de s’intéresser à son agriculture. Car le monde rural polonais a connu de profondes mutations depuis l’adhésion du pays à l’UE il y a 21 ans. Sous l’effet des aides et des standards de la politique agricole commune, la taille moyenne des exploitations agricoles a augmenté, les agriculteurs se sont spécialisés et leurs productions ont conquis les étals du marché commun. Résultat : en 2023, la Pologne était le cinquième plus gros contributeur au secteur agricole européen, derrière la France, l’Allemagne, l’Italie et l’Espagne. Fin février, « Nourrir l'Europe » était en direct du Salon international de l'agriculture à Paris, pour une édition spéciale consacrée à la nouvelle Vision pour l'Agriculture et l'Alimentation que venait d’annoncer la Commission européenne. Quel avenir dessine cette vision pour l’agriculture européenne ? C’était la question au cœur du débat, résumé dans cet épisode. Cette nouvelle vision repose sur quatre piliers principaux : restaurer l‘attractivité des professions agricoles, promouvoir la compétitivité de l'agriculture européenne, développer la protection des ressources naturelles et rétablir le lien entre produits régionaux et consommateurs. At the end of February, 'Food for Europe' was live at the International Agricultural Fair in Paris, with a special broadcast on the new Vision for Agriculture and Food that the European Commission had recently published, and a consideration of what future this new vision points to. This episode is a summary of the debate. The cornerstones of the new vision are to make agriculture attractive again as a profession, to promote the competitiveness of European agriculture, to further expand the protection of natural resources and to re-establish the connection between regional products and consumers.
