01 - General Principles of Biblical Interpretation Pt. 1

This sermon continues a series on Genesis chapter one, focusing on the creation of humanity and the theological significance of being made in God's image. It examines the grammatical distinction between the singular noun 'God' and the plural pronoun 'us' in Genesis 1:26, suggesting a Trinitarian collaboration in creation. The central argument posits that the 'image and likeness' of God refers to the tripartite nature of human beings (body, soul, spirit) and the possession of free will, which distinguishes humans from animals and plants. The text contrasts the initial declaration that creation was 'good' with the later reality of moral corruption, highlighting that morality and conscience are derived from this divine imprint rather than evolutionary instinct. The tone is instructional and apologetic, aiming to provide a biblical explanation for human uniqueness, moral agency, and the capacity for spiritual choice.

This sermon explores God's remedy for suffering by examining the command to sanctify Christ as Lord in the heart, shifting focus from external persecution to internal devotion. The teaching emphasizes the believer's responsibility to be perpetually ready to provide a verbal defense of their faith, known as apologia, when questioned about the hope within them. This defense must be delivered with gentleness, reverential fear, and a good conscience, which is rooted in the finished work of Christ. The passage highlights that while suffering for righteousness is a remote possibility, it is ultimately better to suffer for doing right than for doing wrong, as such endurance finds favor with God. The tone is instructional and pastoral, encouraging believers to rely on the Holy Spirit to embody these character traits while maintaining a secure hope in God's promises.

This episode explores the theological identity of the Bible, arguing that it is not merely a human religious text but the authoritative Word of God. By examining 2 Timothy 3:14-17 and 2 Peter 1:19-21, the episode clarifies that while human authors wrote the scriptures, the Holy Spirit sovereignly guided them, resulting in a text that is both genuinely human and divinely inspired. The episode emphasizes that the Bible's authority is grounded in God's nature rather than church tradition or human consensus, serving as the sole rule for faith and obedience. It further outlines the practical implications of this doctrine, urging believers to hear, read, believe, submit to, and teach Scripture as the means by which God makes them wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

Bible prophecy is not a part of theology or Bible study that stands in some dark, mysterious corner by itself. It is interconnected with all other aspects of theology. In this message, Pastor Josh focuses on the apologetics value from studying Bible prophecy.

This lesson introduces a series on church history by outlining ten essential reasons why believers must study the past of the Christian faith. The central argument is that church history is not merely academic but is vital for understanding God's sovereign providence, the preservation of truth, and the unfolding of Christ's promise to build His church. The speaker emphasizes that studying history provides both encouragement through the faithfulness of past saints and warning through the patterns of historical error and heresy. By examining the lives of both heroes and those who failed, modern Christians gain perspective on their own place in the body of Christ and are better equipped to defend the faith against contemporary distortions. The tone is instructional and pastoral, aiming to motivate the congregation to view their current context as part of a larger, two-thousand-year narrative of God's work in the world.

This episode addresses the cultural claim that truth is subjective by arguing that objective truth exists because God created both reality and the human capacity to know it. Drawing primarily from Psalm 19 and Romans 1, the episode explains that while general revelation through creation leaves humanity without excuse, fallen humans often suppress this truth due to sin and a desire for autonomy. The episode contrasts this with special revelation in Scripture and the person of Jesus Christ, who is identified as the ultimate embodiment of truth. It concludes by encouraging believers to approach knowledge with humility, confidence in God's word, and a desire for worship, rather than treating truth as a matter of personal preference or intellectual independence.

This instructional sermon systematically outlines core Christian doctrines, beginning with the phases and means of sanctification in the life of Israel and the believer. It transitions into a detailed examination of the person of Christ, defining key theological concepts such as the Trinity, the Hypostatic Union, and the doctrine of Kenosis, which explains how Jesus gave up the independent use of divine attributes. The teaching further explores Christ's impeccability and infallibility, arguing for the Bible's authority in all matters, including history and science, against common liberal interpretations. Finally, the sermon connects these doctrines to the atonement, describing it as a restitutionary act that satisfies justice, and concludes with the believer's position in the heavenly realms, emphasizing the need to walk by the Spirit and maintain separation from worldly influences.
