7 Good Minutes

If there's a plan you've talked about more than you've done, this short exercise gives you a different way to share it: report progress to one person instead of collecting applause from everyone.First, shrink the plan to one step with a clear when and where, small enough that you'll know by the end of the week whether it happened. Then send one short message to someone whose opinion you genuinely care about, and ask them to check in on a set day. Each time you do the step, make a mark, and tell them what actually happened, misses included. You won't get the same rush as a big announcement. You'll get a growing, honest record and someone in your corner paying attention to the doing. And if you've already told everyone, you can start from here.Follow 7 Good Minutes for new episodes every day.Watch 7 Good Minutes on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@7goodminutes7 Good Minutes is presented by OCEANSCAPE and published by The Extraordinary Network.

You tell the family at dinner that you're getting back into running, three mornings a week. Everyone cheers, and for about an hour you feel like a runner. A month later the new shoes are still in the box, someone asks how it's going, and you're left thinking you're all talk. This episode looks at why that pattern may say more about the announcement than about your character. A set of small studies found that when people's plans were noticed, they sometimes felt closer to the goal and did less of the work, especially when the goal mattered to them.It also explains why the answer isn't keeping everything secret. Telling the right person, sharing a specific step instead of a big intention, and reporting what you've actually done can turn talking about a plan into something that helps you follow through.Follow 7 Good Minutes for new episodes every day.Watch 7 Good Minutes on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@7goodminutes7 Good Minutes is presented by OCEANSCAPE and published by The Extraordinary Network.

When something you want to do keeps setting off the same worst-case film in your head, you can treat it as one prediction among several instead of the realistic one. This five-minute practice is called a fair hearing. On paper or your phone, write four short lines: the worst case as a prediction, the best realistic case, the most likely case, and one small step you can take in the next day or two. Then put a date next to the worst-case line and, when that date comes, write down what actually happened.Over time, those check-ins build your own record of how often the worst case shows up and how bad it was when it did. The worry may not vanish, but it may get a little quieter, and moving forward may feel a little easier.Follow 7 Good Minutes for new episodes every day.Watch 7 Good Minutes on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@7goodminutes7 Good Minutes is presented by OCEANSCAPE and published by The Extraordinary Network.

You've been meaning to ask your manager about leaving at three on Thursdays for school pickup. Every time you think about it, the same short film plays: a flat face, a pause, a polite no. So you don't ask, and you tell yourself you're being realistic. This episode looks at why the bad version gets the full production while the good one gets two seconds. Bad things tend to weigh more in the mind than good things of the same size, and researchers have found that we usually overestimate how hard a disappointment will hit and how long it will last. In one small study of heavy worriers, most of what people predicted never happened at all.The obvious fix, just picturing it going well, has its own trap. What helps instead is a fairer hearing: weighing the worst, the best and the most likely outcome side by side, and letting the most likely one point to your next sensible step.Follow 7 Good Minutes for new episodes every day.Watch 7 Good Minutes on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@7goodminutes7 Good Minutes is presented by OCEANSCAPE and published by The Extraordinary Network.

The good feeling from a vacation usually fades within about a week of getting home. Three of the things that helped create it can come back in smaller doses: something to look forward to, something new and time outside. This practice is called the Small Trip. Pick a one- or two-hour window this week. Choose a place that's new to you, or one you haven't visited in a long time, and outdoors if you can, like the trail you always drive past or a park across town. Then put it on the calendar today and tell the people you live with, so everyone has a few days of something good coming. When the day arrives, keep it easy, with no packed schedule and no goal. If the whole family can't go, an hour on your own still counts. Before the week is over, pick the next one.Follow 7 Good Minutes for new episodes every day.Watch 7 Good Minutes on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@7goodminutes7 Good Minutes is presented by OCEANSCAPE and published by The Extraordinary Network.

It's the first Monday back. The suitcase is still half unpacked in the hallway, there's sand in a shoe somewhere, and by Wednesday the trip already feels like it happened to someone else.If the good feeling slipped away almost as soon as you walked in the door, you didn't do vacation wrong. Researchers who tracked working people before, during and after time off found that the lift usually fades within the first week back at work. In one study, the clearest happiness difference showed up before the trip, not after it.This episode looks at what a vacation actually gives you: something to look forward to, something new, time outside and time that isn't run by the usual demands. Most ordinary weeks have almost none of these, which is why one trip can't carry the other fifty-one weeks. The good news is that you don't have to wait a whole year to get some of that feeling back. Smaller doses of the same ingredients can fit inside a regular week.Follow 7 Good Minutes for new episodes every day.Watch 7 Good Minutes on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@7goodminutes7 Good Minutes is presented by OCEANSCAPE and published by The Extraordinary Network.

At the end of a flat workday, pick one routine thing you did. Not your biggest win. A report, a delivery, a repair, a phone call. Then ask one question: who is a little better off because this got done? If your first answer is a department or "the company," keep following it until you land on an actual person. A customer. A coworker who didn't have to stay late. A family you'll never meet.Finish one sentence in writing: because I did this, someone can do that. If you honestly can't find anyone at work, look closer to home. Keep the sentence where you'll see it, and save real thank-yous right beside it.Don't expect a sudden love for your job. Some days the trace will feel like a stretch. What you can reasonably hope for is a workday that feels a little less like a conveyor belt.Follow 7 Good Minutes for new episodes every day.Watch 7 Good Minutes on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@7goodminutes7 Good Minutes is presented by OCEANSCAPE and published by The Extraordinary Network.

It's Thursday afternoon. You've answered forty emails, sat through a meeting that could have been a message, and somewhere around three o'clock a quiet question shows up: what is any of this for?A lot of us assume the answer is a different job. This episode looks at what researchers have found before you go looking. People doing essentially the same work can see it in very different ways. In one university call center, callers who spent about five minutes with a student their fundraising had helped were working far harder a month later. Nothing about the job changed. They could just picture a real person at the end of the call.Your work may not lack meaning. It may lack a line of sight. And sometimes the nearest person at the end of it is sitting at your own kitchen table. This isn't a way to talk yourself into a bad situation, and no amount of perspective fixes unfair pay or a bad boss. But for the ordinary, flat Thursday, it's a different question to ask.Follow 7 Good Minutes for new episodes every day.Watch 7 Good Minutes on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@7goodminutes7 Good Minutes is presented by OCEANSCAPE and published by The Extraordinary Network.

Someone asks you to take on one more thing, and you feel that small sinking feeling. Before you answer, here's one quick way to slow the moment down.Say, "Let me check and get back to you by tonight," and name a time. Then, when you have a quiet minute, ask yourself: if this were happening tomorrow, would I still say yes? Tomorrow takes away the imaginary free time we always picture next month. If the answer is yes, say it and mean it. If it's no, send a short, kind reply: thank them, say no, and give one true reason. No long apology, no made-up excuse. You might get a few awkward seconds or a little disappointment, but research on declined invitations suggests the other person is usually less upset than we predict. What you get back is a Saturday you keep.Follow 7 Good Minutes for new episodes every day.Watch 7 Good Minutes on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@7goodminutes7 Good Minutes is presented by OCEANSCAPE and published by The Extraordinary Network.

You're walking out of school pickup with a backpack in each hand when another parent asks if you could run the bake sale table on Saturday. Everything in you says no. You hear yourself say, "Sure, no problem."This episode looks at the two predictable mistakes that tend to show up in the few seconds after someone asks. One is about the other person: research on declined invitations found that people consistently overestimate how disappointed or upset the person who invited them will be. The other is about future you: we tend to expect more spare time next month than we'll actually have.Put those together and the reluctant yes starts to make sense. It usually isn't a character flaw. It's a decision made too fast, and a little distance from that moment, like "Let me check and get back to you tonight," can change what you say.Follow 7 Good Minutes for new episodes every day.Watch 7 Good Minutes on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@7goodminutes7 Good Minutes is presented by OCEANSCAPE and published by The Extraordinary Network.
