William Tyrrell Part 3

The search for William Tyrrell was becoming one of the largest missing child investigations in Australian history. But as the years passed without answers, the investigation itself began to change. In Part 3, we examine a major turning point in William’s case: the coronial inquest, the investigation led by Detective Chief Inspector Gary Jubelin, and the controversy that ultimately removed him from the case.  We look at the covert recordings that led to criminal charges against Jubelin, his eventual conviction, and what was happening in the search for William as the investigation moved forward without him. A tip about a washing machine repairman gave investigators a name to pursue in William Tyrrell’s disappearance. But as scrutiny of Bill Spedding intensified, the evidence supporting his alibi raised questions about the direction of the investigation. In part two, I examine why police focused on Spedding, what happened when they investigated him, and how their attention shifted toward William’s foster grandmother’s neighbor, Paul Savage. We follow Detective Gary Jubelin’s efforts to test his theories, including an operation involving a decoy Spider Man suit left along a bush trail. As investigators returned to the surrounding bushland for another extensive search, one question remained central: Had William wandered away, or was someone else responsible for his disappearance? William Tyrrell was last seen on September 12, 2014, at his foster grandmother’s home on Benaroon Drive in Kendall, New South Wales, Australia. He was three years old when he disappeared and would be 15 years old as of September 2026. William is white, with straight brown hair and hazel eyes. He has a large, dark freckle on the top left side of his head, approximately five centimeters, or two inches, behind his hairline. He was wearing a Spider Man costume when he disappeared. In August of 1977, 22 year old Shari Lynn Roth left her apartment in North Conway, New Hampshire, for a short afternoon hike. She was supposed to arrive at the teen program where she worked by seven o’clock that evening, but she never showed up. Three days later, Shari was found murdered in the White Mountains. Nearly 50 years later, Shari’s case remains unsolved. Investigators are hoping brand new pictures, old hiking logs, memories from the trail, and information about a red Volkswagen Beetle could finally lead them to the person responsible. In this episode of The Next Chapter, I welcome survivor advocate and former law enforcement officer Kara Robinson Chamberlain back to Voices for Justice. Since Kara’s first appearance in 2022, she has co-created and hosted Survivor’s Guide to True Crime, helped shape a scripted film about her life, worked on a documentary exploring ethics in true crime, and stepped into a new role as the host and investigator of Somebody Knows Something. Fifteen-year-old Sophie Reeder vanished in the early hours of May 20, 2017. In her bedroom, a candle was still burning. Three hundred dollars was left behind. On her calendar, one date had been marked with a mysterious “X.” Surveillance cameras captured Sophie walking alone along Davie Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Hours later, her phone went silent at a nearby apartment complex and Sophie was never seen again. Anyone with information about Sophie’s disappearance is asked to call the Fort Lauderdale Police Department at 954-828-5700. On the morning of March 9, 1996, Amberly Mendoza was found murdered in her bedroom in Yuma, Arizona. She was just 10 years old. Her family’s home had been filled with people following a birthday celebration, yet someone was able to reach Amberly, sexually assault her, take her life, and leave without being identified. Thirty years later, investigators have DNA believed to belong to her killer. So why has no one been held accountable? The FBI is now offering a reward of up to $30,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Still Seeking Justice is a new Voices for Justice series created to reconnect with families previously featured on the show, learn what has changed, and determine how we can help now. In this first installment, Sarah speaks with Bonnie Bell, whose sister Danielle disappeared from Cantonment, Florida, at just fourteen years old in September 2001. Bonnie shares major developments since Danielle’s original episode, including new private investigators, dozens of leads generated through media coverage, a recently completed search, and two additional locations she hopes will soon be searched. Bonnie also discusses her effort to establish Danielle’s Law. On May 24, 1986, nineteen-year-old Shelley Sikes left work at Gaido’s Seafood Restaurant in Galveston and began driving toward her boyfriend’s home. She never arrived. Witnesses saw a pickup force her car off the road, and her Ford Pinto was discovered hours later with the driver’s window shattered and her belongings still inside. Two men were ultimately convicted of aggravated kidnapping, but Shelley’s case is not closed. She has never been found, and both men died in prison without providing information that brought her home. Investigators have made it clear that the case will remain open until Shelley is found. Shelley was 4 feet 11 inches tall and weighed approximately 90 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. She has a scar on her right knee and was unable to bend her right index finger.
