What happens when the race you signed up for disappears, and the version you’re left with is nothing like the one you wanted?

In 2020, Miranda Mason was three weeks out from Ironman South Africa. The medal, the crowds, the finish-line fanfare, the moment someone finally calls you an Ironman. Then the world shut down and the race was gone.

What replaced it was a compromise. A full Ironman distance taken on in Dubai with no official event, no spectators, no red carpet, brutal weather, and barely any support. A swim off a half-closed beach, the long solo loop out at Al Qudra, a full electrical storm overhead, and Tom in a truck loaded with water and drop bags as her only support crew.

It was everything she thought she didn’t want. Six years on, Miranda joins Tom to reflect on why it turned out to be exactly what she needed.

In this episode we explore the difference between confidence and self-belief, learning to sit with discomfort when no one is watching, managing your ego out in the desert on your own, and discovering what you’re truly capable of when there’s no medal, no crowd, and no one else to rely on. Miranda also shares how the lessons from that day continue to shape her business, her relationships, and her priorities today, and why she now rates this unofficial, improvised lockdown Ironman above the real event she went on to finish in Austria.

Because sometimes the biggest achievement isn’t crossing the finish line. It’s discovering who you become when the finish line isn’t even there.

If you’re ready to challenge yourself, get out of your own way, and find out what’s possible, this episode is for you.
