Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell appear to have met in New York in 1991 through mutual friends, although the precise details have shifted depending on the source and Maxwell’s own retellings. In a 2016 deposition, Maxwell said they were introduced by a mutual friend, and in a later Justice Department interview she gave a more detailed version: an American girlfriend suggested she meet Epstein after Maxwell had ended a long-term relationship, telling her Epstein was looking for a wife. Maxwell said she went to Epstein’s Madison Avenue office for tea and found him intelligent and engaging. Importantly, that meeting appears to have occurred before Robert Maxwell’s death in November 1991, despite the frequently repeated version of the story that Ghislaine met Epstein only after her father died. Epstein’s pilots also placed Maxwell in his orbit by 1991, reinforcing that their relationship had already begun developing before the collapse of the Maxwell family empire.
After Robert Maxwell’s death and the financial scandal that engulfed his companies, Ghislaine remained in New York and became increasingly entwined with Epstein. By Maxwell’s account, Epstein gave her something to focus on while her family was in crisis, initially asking her to help search for and decorate properties; by 1992, she said she was being paid to work for him, and their relationship became sexual that year. What began as a social and romantic connection evolved into a remarkably durable partnership in which Maxwell helped manage Epstein’s homes, staff and social world. Prosecutors later established that by the mid-1990s she was also helping Epstein recruit and groom underage girls, conduct that ultimately led to her federal conviction. The origin story, therefore, was not simply that a grieving heiress met a wealthy financier after her father’s death; the available record indicates Maxwell met Epstein before Robert Maxwell died, and the relationship rapidly deepened as her old world was collapsing around her.
