Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) recently called on former security chief Genaro García Luna to present concrete evidence backing his allegations that AMLO has ties to drug cartels. This comes after García Luna, who is awaiting sentencing for accepting bribes from cartels, claimed in a letter that he has proof, including videos and audios, of López Obrador’s connections to organized crime, specifically the Sinaloa Cartel.

In response, AMLO challenged García Luna to release this alleged evidence, sarcastically suggesting that García Luna could ask his "friends at the DEA" for help in making the materials public. García Luna’s accusations also extend to the claim that the Mexican government provided false information to the U.S. about his case, which adds a layer of international tension as U.S. authorities are also involved in the investigation.

The timing of these allegations is particularly significant, as García Luna is set to be sentenced in October 2024, and AMLO’s term as president is nearing its end.
