The mother of a Frisco high school student accused of fatally stabbing a fellow athlete during a track meet earlier this month spoke publicly for the first time on Wednesday, describing how her family has been “under attack” by a wave of racist harassment, false accusations and death threats. On Thursday, a “swatting” call was made to an address linked to the family of Austin Metcalf, the Frisco teenager who was fatally stabbed. Frisco police said officers responded earlier in the evening to a gunshot call to an address involving Austin Metcalf’s family. A police spokesperson said the call turned out to be false. In other news, Dallas ISD officials said that the shooting at Wilmer-Hutchins High School that sent several students to the hospital might not have been preventable. Dallas ISD police Chief Albert Martinez said at a news conference Thursday morning that all doors at this campus were “locked and secured,” meaning the door could not be opened from the outside but could be opened from the inside, as fire code requires; in a seismic shift for Texas education that could have ramifications for decades, the state House signed off on a plan early Thursday to allow parents to use state dollars to pay for their children’s private school education; and the writing has been on the wall. As the Dallas Mavericks move forward with their plans to build a basketball-only arena, their 32-year partnership with the Dallas Stars, their roommates at American Airlines Center and Reunion Arena, appears to be nearing an end. Strong to severe storms are possible in North Texas this weekend, bringing a wet and rainy start to Easter weekend. According to the forecast from KXAS-TV and the National Weather Service’s Fort Worth office, the storms are expected to begin late Friday night and will become stronger early Saturday. In other news, Local health officials have reported a measles case in Rockwall County, possibly connected to the West Texas outbreak; as police searched for a suspect in a shooting that injured several students at Wilmer-Hutchins High School, a local nonprofit says it was working with a 17-year-old to turn himself in. Four students were wounded in a shooting Tuesday afternoon at Wilmer-Hutchins High School in Dallas — nearly a year to the day since gunfire erupted on the same campus. Officers were dispatched about 1 p.m. to the school. In other news, Texas public health officials on Tuesday reported an additional 20 measles cases in the ongoing outbreak, for a total of 561 measles cases reported in the past two and a half months; while national interest in President John F. Karmelo Anthony, the 17-year-old accused of fatally stabbing another student at a high school track meet in Frisco earlier this month, was released from jail Monday after his bond was significantly lowered. Anthony was released from the Collin County jail about 4:20 p.m. and put on house arrest with an ankle monitor. In other news, Sen. John Cornyn has asked the Department of Justice to investigate planned Muslim-centric neighborhoods outside of Dallas over concerns that those involved could discriminate against Jewish and Christian Texans; more than five years after the redesign of a depressed roadway on Interstate 30 that separates downtown Dallas and the Cedars was proposed by the Texas Department of Transportation, project costs have nearly tripled, growing to almost $890 million; and the Dallas Wings selected UConn star Paige Bueckers with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA draft on Monday night. The teenager accused of fatally stabbing another student in Frisco earlier this month is set to appear in court Monday to learn whether his $1 million bond would be reduced.Karmelo Anthony, 17, has been in Collin County jail on a murder charge for more than a week. In other news, between December 2024 and March 2025, the average price per dozen jumped from $4.15 to $6.23, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Officials link these price increases to bird flu; the Agricultural industry relies on immigrant labor, but with President Donald Trump’s immigration policies — including his promise of mass deportations — it could cause widespread pain and it creates an uncertain future. More than 27% of Texas farmworkers are immigrants; and U.S. consumer sentiment tumbled to the second-weakest reading on record while short- and long-term inflation expectations soared to multidecade highs on growing tariff concerns. The preliminary April sentiment index slid 6.2 points to 50.8, according to the University of Michigan, below economists’ forecasts. A $337.4 billion state spending plan that funnels money to schools, the border, health services and other state needs for the next two years was approved by the Texas House early Friday morning after a day-long debate. The budget plan also includes new money for teacher pay raises, property tax cuts, medical research, and a private school voucher-like program.
