Sarah is finally back on home soil after weeks of gallivanting around the world, and Ally has just come off the FMG New Zealand show. Somewhere between the roti updates and the stage lights, the two of them got talking about how much physique sport has shifted, and that conversation became this episode.
Ally has been watching the trend build for the last 12 to 18 months, and at the show she finally got to sit down with coaches she deeply respects and hear them all say the same thing. Size is up. Everywhere. Across every federation and every category. Bikini now looks like bikini athletic used to look. Athletic looks like fitness. Conditioning keeps pushing the envelope. Athletes are staying in one category for years and refining, rather than building up through the divisions the way they used to.
In this episode they unpack what that actually means for you as a competitor, and why the answer is almost never "get bigger faster."
They get into where the real pressure is coming from and why athletes are hearing "I have to be bigger, leaner, or take something" when the honest answer is usually time. Why this is now a three year conversation rather than a twelve week one, even at entry level. Why people are spending longer in off season, letting go of the abs, and why Ally thinks that shift is one of the healthiest things happening in the sport. The uncomfortable trade off nobody posts about, which is how much size you need to carry off season to look competitive on stage, especially if you are natural. And the one change Ally does not like: the growing inconsistency in standard between stages and countries, and why she would still rather be put on the hardest stage in the room.
Ally also opens up about her own position. Why she is not driven to compete the way she used to be, what changed after Sophia, the conversation with Christos that gave her permission to stop, and why she is now letting her body inform the decision rather than choosing a category and forcing herself into it. She shares the lesson from her comeback show after George, when she pushed ahead with a stage she should have walked away from because she had already announced it publicly. And she talks about moving her sprint triathlon timeline without a shred of guilt, because the date was never the point.
Plus: her first world stage in an 80 athlete lineup and the top ten callout that changed everything, why post stage depression hits hardest when there is no identity outside the stage, why you can build a coaching business on expertise instead of a highlight reel, and the crossover strategy Ally recommends when you genuinely do not know where you sit.
If you have been staring at a category wondering whether you are big enough, or you have already decided your timeline and you are quietly panicking about it, listen to this one. You are not a tree. You are allowed to move.
