Clare, who lived in Salford, was tragically murdered and set on fire at the hands of her former partner, George Appleton, in February 2009. Despite being unusually thin, he could reportedly consume enormous amounts of food, swallow live animals and non-food objects, and still remain constantly hungry. During the French Revolutionary Wars, the military even used him as a courier by having him swallow sealed messages, but the mission failed when he was captured. Historical accounts also describe increasingly desperate behaviour driven by hunger, though some of the more sensational stories are debated by historians.
