Dr. Cathy Lucas is an Associate Professor of Marine Biology at the University of Southampton and one of the world’s leading experts on jellyfish. With a career spanning decades, her research has taken her across the globe, studying jellyfish species in diverse marine environments and contributing to a deeper understanding of their behavior, ecology, and impact on our oceans. Her work includes international collaborations with scientists in New Zealand, where she has been investigating jellyfish blooms and analysing global trends linked to changing ocean conditions. As climate change continues to warm our seas, Dr. Lucas is at the forefront of research exploring how these shifts are influencing jellyfish populations and what that means for marine ecosystems worldwide.

Closer to home, she has been working in collaboration with The Nautilus Project in Gibraltar, monitoring jellyfish swarms and helping to provide valuable insights into how local waters are being affected. Her findings play an important role in understanding the increasing presence of jellyfish in the region and the wider environmental implications.

Dr. Lucas is also preparing to take part in this year’s international jellyfish symposium in Cork, where leading scientists from around the world will come together to share research, discuss challenges, and explore future solutions.
