MOBILITY ACADEMY PODCAST | THE PRINCIPLE OF UTILITY

The principle of utility is something I’ve been studying a lot recently. Something life has taught me naturally and spontaneously… Something I think you’ve learned too.

We’re human beings in a non-human environment. We all have schedules, time restrictions and routines to follow during the day that prevent us all from spending the whole day training… Well, at least, some of us.

So we need to make sure that we don’t waste our energy and most importantly our time on exercises that don’t deserve our attention. That’s something really difficult to figure out. Take for example a pancake stretch, the core of this podcast. The very same concept may very well be applied to any other kind of physical discipline. How many exercises do you know that may help develop a pancake stretch? Surely a lot. All it takes is surfing the net, looking up “pancake tutorial” and a whole lot of exercise will show up. How many of them are actually effective for you? You probably have no idea. How many of them are worth adding to your training program? You probably have no idea, because you don’t know which one is “better” for you… yet. This is downright information overload: hundreds of exercises but “only” one hour to train. Here is where the principle of utility comes in handy: it selects the best exercises and progressions for you in order to save time and energy, all the while avoiding feeling frustrated. You need to learn how to SELECT an exercise according to its utility in a given moment.

This is what I always try to do in my video courses as well as in my online coaching programs: maximize the results within a given time frame.
