Martyrs (2008)

Happy Halloween Hauntings, my lovely listeners! Join me and Halloween Queen Gabrielle Leigh as we dive into the abject world of the French Extremity film Martyrs. Gabrielle is my queer, goth, Taurus, witch sister and we were so excited to connected we gabbed for over two hours. Too scared to watch Martyrs yourself? Well you're in luck. Gabrielle and I discuss the history of the New French Extremity movement and analyze this controversial film in a scene by scene breakdown. We talk pain theory, martyrology, themes of trauma, sapphic friendship, and transcendence in this misunderstood masterpiece of the "torture porn" era. We had some technical difficulties filming this episode so the audio gets slightly less high quality in the second half but I promise the discussion is worth it!As always, check out Patreon.com/GirlsGutsGiallo for all my bonus content!

What about thousands of pounds of plastic Halloween crap in a landfill? That's pretty terrifying and loathsome! For this special crossover episode, hostess of the It's Always Halloween podcast, Lucé Tomlin-Brenner, joins me for a hater discussion about the plague that is Halloween consumerism. We bemoan how our favorite holiday, once about rebellion and fear, has become a cheap marketing ploy to sell lead filled home goods to bored normies for their TikTok hauls. Why is this bad and what should we do about it? Listen to mitigate your capitalist Halloween blues.

What is the function of social pillorying and does it actual serve real life survivors? Why are we so drawn to this kind of content? How has Chris Hansen's legacy furthered surveillance culture in a post 9/11 world? In this special collaboration episode, fellow film writer and survivor Blueghosts joins me to review Lance Oppenheim's debut controversial narrative feature, 'Primetime.' While we both enjoyed the film, we are also critical of certain aspects. Additionally, we discuss our personal connections with 'To Catch a Predator' and Chris Hansen's legacy of carceral punishment and surveillance. We analyze the predator hunt phenomenon as formerly victimized adolescents and current abolitionists.

Everyone is talking about the Western Mass lesbian bar (don't ask) but we're still obsessed with the guy who pepper sprayed a fellow audience member who was on their phone. On this hater episode, I am joined by kindred-hater-spirit Joshua Conkel to discuss the phenomenon of terrible movie theater audiences. Joshua is co-host of Bloodhaus, a delightful podcast about arthouse horror and I've wanted him on as a guest for a long time. We bitch about rude audience members who laugh at anything in a movie they think is old and silly as well as the annoying freaks checking their phone in a dark theater. But of course, we do go off the rails and rant about sex negativity, childish gays grossed out by genitalia that is different than theirs, how annoyed we are by other queer people, why sex scenes are great, and so much more. We promise we're actually really nice people! Sign up on Patreon for the full experience.

This is a preview of my new Patreon only podcast called Murder Mommy Musings. Listeners have been asking me for years to comment on topics other than film. Well, be careful what you wish for! Sign up on patreon.com/GirlsGutsGiallo at the Murder Mommy tier to get access to the new show. You can also buy episodes individually for $5. Here is the first episode of my new, Patreon only podcast called Murder Mommy Musings where you can hear me at my most unfiltered. Consider this the "shock jock" tier. On this very first episode, femme dyke drag queen Anne Tifa and I rant about misogyny, queers who have not deprogrammed themselves from Christianity, AI Doms, the mainstreaming of thinspo, and being loud Jewesses. These episodes go to some pretty unhinged places. I don't believe in trigger warnings and I have gallows humor. You've been warned!

Appy-polly loggies for the unexpected break, my brothers. But I promise this one is a real horrorshow for the prestoopnick ookos that require a bit of the old ultraviolence. My droog joins your favorite devotchka for a bit of the old in out. Just kidding! We're talking about Stanley Kubrick's transgressive masterpiece, A Clockwork Orange. Iris Ray is a photographer and cinephile with an eye the chaotic, colorful, and pop art inspired, making them a perfect guest for this film! This is a long one since we analyze in a traditional scene by scene format. We chat about the controversy surrounding the film's release and it's themes of homoerotic masculinity that portended our current cultural environment. We gush over the interiors and costumes. In fact, Iris replicated Alex de Large's droog outfit! So definitely check this episode out on my YouTube channel if the platform you're on only allows audio. If you identify with the goth subculture or the alternative community, you've likely seen discourse in your algorithm about the "hypersexualization" or the "fetishization" of the goth girl. Indeed, the rise of the goth girl in the adult content sphere has caused quite a stir in the community, with creators now being accused of LARPing as a way to draw in male viewers and contributing to an overall cultural atmosphere of porn sickness, misogyny, and the sexualization of alternative women. We all hate posers, of course. But when does this discourse become puritanical and straight up anti-sex worker? Adult content creator and tattoo artist Kris Quinn joins me for a discussion about just this very thing. We weigh in as two older goth women who have been working in the fetish/sex work space for most of our lives. Gothic culture evolved alongside the BDSM/fetish fashion scene, which has always been populated by sex workers, so why is everyone being such a prude these days? We chat about our own journeys as gothic sluts, how free sexuality is integral to the goth ideology, how goth men are never under the same scrutiny as women in the sub culture, and our thoughts about the commodification of identity in the adult industry under capitalism. References include Razor Candi, Suicide Girls, Burning Angel, Brad Troemel, and of course, the infamous Goth House.Follow Kris on Instagram and Fansly!

Body horror drag queen Mx. Ology joins me for a special hater episode dragging the currently popular "weird girl" marketing content trend wherein creators make starter packs for the esoteric baddie. What the hell does that even mean and why do we hate it? We rant about the flattening and gentrification of subversive art and subculture and why we think it is sinister and capitalistic!

Happy Pride to perverts only! Back when I first started this show, I released an episode on William Friedkin's controversial film based on the Mineshaft murders, Cruising. I have gained so much knowledge and experience since 2019! So to celebrate the season, it felt appropriate to revisit this classic piece of leather history. I am joined by Andy Campbell (author of Bound Together) and Morgan Woolsey (who did her PhD on the soundtrack!) We work through our scene by scene analysis of Cruising, injecting history lessons about the leather scene, real life murders, infamous protests, incredible punk soundtrack, and more. This is one of my favorite episodes to date! I love when I get to go really deep and hard in it. It being the joys of cinema, of course. Society waits for you! Artist and filmmaker Ian Deleón joins me to talk about Brian Yuzna's body horror classic. We deep dive and do a scene by scene analysis of the film and discuss larger themes, like how sexual perversion has become coded as a decadent failure of the rich. We also link the film back to our current cultural moment and the recent release of the Epstein files and the ensuing moral panic. For more juicy content sign up at patreon.com/girlsgutsgiallo
