Episode 222: UMDelightful

When Sony released their first handheld device in 2004, they unleashed what would be the most successful handheld not made by Nintendo. The Playstation Portable was positioned as a gaming and multimedia powerhouse with adaptations of blockbuster titles, a user interface like the PS3, and media playback. Many of the PSP's unique titles have seen ports elsewhere over the years. Matt & Gen are joined by Chris from A Novel Console and Consoles and Stuff for a console retrospective on the PSP; The games, the experience, the Universal Media Disc. Video games often include boss encounters. Whether to mark the end of a stage, test a player's competence, or make a large narrative beat; there's no shortage of memorable confrontations and climactic showdowns. They can be the source of a game's most memorable moments, and most unforgivable frustrations. Matt & Gen discuss what makes for a fun boss encounter, what sticks in our minds after the conflict ends, and how far is too far of a setback when the challenge proves too much? We have a Patreon!
