In this episode of The Backstory on the Shroud of Turin, Aline Vargas interviews Guy R. Powell about his recent mission trip to Bangladesh. Guy spent seven full days presenting the Shroud to Christian pastors. Across seven sessions, approximately 210 house pastors attended.
These pastors often work regular jobs while leading small Christian communities in their homes. Their ministry creates an opportunity for the message to reach thousands more people. Guy explains why the Bangladesh audience required a different approach to the Shroud.
Rather than concentrating mainly on scientific details, he focused on the connection between Old Testament prophecy, the Gospel accounts, and physical evidence visible on the cloth. The discussion explores the pierced side of Jesus Christ, blood evidence, the Passion, and the Resurrection.
Aline and Guy also discuss the difficult reality faced by some Christian converts in Bangladesh. Guy shares personal stories of Christians who experienced rejection from family, threats, violence, arrest, and other consequences after conversion.
These experiences changed the meaning of the mission. For these communities, the Shroud can represent more than an ancient artifact. It can become a visual witness connecting suffering, sacrifice, Jesus Christ, and the hope of the Resurrection.
Guy also explains why fundraising matters. Transportation, meals, venues, printed materials, and other expenses limited how many pastors could attend the presentations.
The next stage includes producing full-color Shroud materials in Bengali. These resources will allow local pastors to continue teaching within their own communities. Additional support may also help provide Bengali-language Bibles.
The conversation concludes with ways people can help through prayer, donations, sharing educational resources, and becoming involved with Shroud outreach. The mission also continues the purpose behind Guy's book, The Only Witness: A History of the Shroud of Turin.
