The Siders family case now has one defendant the court says cannot be tried and another facing 23 criminal counts while her own competency remains unresolved. Gary Siders Sr., 73, was found incompetent to stand trial on September 9 after a forensic examiner concluded he could not understand or assist in the proceedings. The judge also accepted the finding that he is not restorable, leaving prosecutors to choose between dismissal and possible civil commitment. Gary Sr. had been charged with 16 counts of child endangerment after 16 children were found June 30 in a Hamden, Ohio, home. He had already been released on a recognizance bond because of serious medical concerns and is subject to GPS monitoring. His attorney has said he expects the criminal case to be dismissed, but that decision still belongs to prosecutors and the court. Elizabeth Siders is on a different track. She faces 19 child-endangerment counts plus four additional felony charges involving a teenage relative, and she pleaded not guilty to the newer charges on September 16. Her bonds total $550,000. Her attorney requested a competency evaluation, and the report had not yet been filed at the time of her arraignment. The other remaining defendants, Gary Siders Jr. and Christina Siders, also asked to be evaluated for competency. So the same prosecution that began with four adults and 16 children is now being filtered through four separate mental-competency questions. Bryan Kohberger's former defense team had already raised concerns about his ability to process the case before he accepted the plea deal that sent him to prison for life. A filing unsealed on September 22, 2026, says his lawyers told Judge Steven Hippler that Kohberger was struggling to rationally understand adverse rulings and what those rulings meant for his options. The defense did not tell the court he was incompetent. Instead, they asked for additional time and expert assistance so they could communicate with him about major choices, including whether to testify, continue toward trial or resolve the case. The court denied the continuance, and six days later Kohberger pleaded guilty to four murders and burglary. That timing now sits inside Kohberger's effort to undo the plea. His new attorney, Greg Rauch, says the sequence does not automatically make the plea unconstitutional. He argues it creates a factual issue about whether Kohberger had enough time and help to understand the position he was in when he made the decision. The legal filing arrives alongside a very public family statement. Kohberger's parents and sisters say they support his post-conviction challenge and want the full truth tested in court. Before Caleb Flynn called 911, prosecutors say his private messages had already documented a year-long affair and repeated anger toward his wife Ashley. Nick Reiner's murder case just lost its biggest sentencing headline, while a second courtroom fight is putting his parents' money at the center of his defense. Prosecutors announced September 15 that they will not seek the death penalty for the alleged killings of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. If Nick is convicted as charged, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office says he faces life without parole. At the same time, Reiner is asking a probate court to release money from a separate trust created for him in 1993. His lawyers say half of that trust became mandatorily payable when he turned 30 on September 14, 2023. They estimate that distribution at about $558,000 and argue it became his before his parents died. The full trust is now reported at roughly $1.6 million. The dispute is not over the larger Reiner family estate. It is over Nick's individual trust and whether money scheduled for him years earlier can be withheld while he awaits trial. His attorneys argue California's slayer statute does not reach funds that already vested before the alleged killings. Trustees have resisted releasing the money while the criminal case and the statute's consequences remain unresolved. Former private defense attorney Alan Jackson has said his firm would be prepared to resume representation if funding becomes available. Meanwhile, prosecutors allege Nick killed his parents after lying in wait, an allegation that remains unproven. Reiner has pleaded not guilty. His documented mental-health history may become part of the defense, but no formal insanity plea has been publicly established. The Lindsay Clancy case is now focused on two kinds of information people say they could not see in time. Patrick Clancy told 60 Minutes that mental illness can be 'tragically deceptive.' Days later, Lindsay's lawyers asked the court to investigate what the lone holdout juror disclosed before he was selected and what he was doing during deliberations. Michael Desronvil was the only juror who favored criminal responsibility when the panel deadlocked 11-1 and Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial on September 4. Records reported after the trial show Desronvil had previously faced a domestic assault charge that was dismissed, had an active restraining order involving his teenage nephew when he was seated, and was involved in eviction proceedings. The defense is not treating those facts as automatic proof of misconduct. It is asking whether his confidential questionnaire and voir dire answers accurately disclosed the background the court normally asks prospective jurors to reveal. Reddington's filing also asks for a limited inquiry into alleged cellphone use during deliberations. Other jurors have accused the holdout of spending time on his phone, while Desronvil has publicly defended his verdict position and said he had no doubts about Clancy's criminal responsibility. Judge Sullivan has not publicly granted the requested inquiry as of September 23. Before the prosecution could turn Caleb Flynn's affair into a courtroom reveal, his own defense put it in front of the jury.
