15. 18 Habits To Improve Your Health, Energy & Mood During Long Winter Months

Are the winter months, especially around January/February, tough for you? Do you feel like you struggle with low energy, cranky mood and an overall lack of excitement for life? 

This is a pattern I experience every winter season, getting worse at this time for the year. 

The weather is cold, days are short, sunny days are hard to come by and there is little to do. 

As a result, I stop feeling like myself. I don't want to do much except stay home and sleep. 

Can you relate?

You don't need to be living in a snowy or cold city to feel the effects of winter blues, or in more severe cases, seasonal affective depression (SAD). If you're unfamiliar with SAD, it's a type of depression that's related to changes in seasons — SAD begins and ends at about the same times every year.

If you've been experiencing one of more of the following symptoms, this episode is going to be extremely valuable for you: 

  • Feeling joyless, sad or down most of the day, nearly every day
  • Oversleeping and constant fatigue 
  • Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed
  • Having low energy and feeling sluggish
  • Experiencing carbohydrate cravings, overeating and weight gain
  • Having difficulty concentrating
  • Feeling hopeless, worthless or guilt


If you're feeling any of those symptoms, I want you to know that you're not alone, and remove any guilt you may have about feeling down during this time of the year. SAD affects many people, me included. 
 

Over the years, I've learned to manage this yearly slump.I know what to expect and what habits to put in place to maintain a relatively positive mental health. Without these habits, my relationships, work, and sense of well-being would take a MASSIVE hit.
