Jamie Moyer: 25-Year MLB Journey, Mariners Run, Phillies World Series & Pitching at 49 | IN THE FRONT ROW
Former MLB pitcher Jamie Moyer discusses growing up near Philadelphia, following local sports from afar, and developing a passion for baseball through youth leagues coached by his father. After not being drafted out of high school, he attended St. Joseph’s University, balanced work and school, and emerged as a starter; a Cubs scout first noticed him at an adult-league tournament, leading to his sixth-round selection in 1984. Moyer recalls making his MLB debut with the Cubs at Wrigley Field on June 16, 1986 against his childhood idol Steve Carlton and the Phillies, and later finding consistency and success during 11 years with the Seattle Mariners, including the 116-win 2001 season that fell short of a World Series. With 10-and-5 rights, he accepted a trade back to Philadelphia, where the team’s energy helped extend his career and culminated in the 2008 World Series championship and parade. He explains his motivation to return from Tommy John and Flexor-Pronator surgery, becoming the oldest MLB pitcher to record a win at 49, and reflects on longevity, mentoring, charity work (including a foundation tied to grief camps), and current efforts such as “Mound Visits with Jamie Moyer.”
