S3, EP : 59. Ronda: Where History Meets the Andalusian Sky

Hello, Loopers, and welcome back to Spanish Loops!This week, Fran and I are taking you to a place that, for me, is impossible to forget: Ronda, in the mountains of Málaga, one of those Spanish places where history, landscape and everyday life seem to have decided to live together.Perched above the spectacular Tajo de Ronda, with its famous Puente Nuevo crossing the gorge, Ronda is much more than a beautiful photograph. It is a town with layers upon layers of history. Its story reaches back to prehistoric times, with archaeological evidence of human settlement going back to the Neolithic, while nearby caves preserve much older traces of human presence. Later came the Romans, with Acinipo, then centuries of Islamic history, the Kingdom of Granada, the Christian conquest, and eventually the romantic image of Ronda that fascinated nineteenth-century travellers.And you can still feel all of that when you walk through the town.There are ancient walls, Arab baths, palaces, churches, narrow streets, magnificent viewpoints and, of course, that extraordinary bridge suspended above the gorge. But what I particularly love about Ronda is that it never feels like a museum. It is a living Andalusian town, surrounded by the Serranía de Ronda, with its traditions, food, wine, stories and very strong personality.In this episode, Fran and I take you through some of the history, characters and places that have helped make Ronda one of the most fascinating destinations in southern Spain. Because, as we always say on Spanish Loops, Spain can never agree to make just one version of anything!So, come hungry, Loopers. This week we're sitting down at the Balearic table to discover some of the most delicious food Spain has to offer.And yes… there may be an ensaimada involved.

Have you ever wondered what happens when a country decides that retirement should come with a little sunshine, a nice hotel, and a holiday?Well… Spain has an answer for that.It’s called Imserso, and if you’re visiting Spain and suddenly notice thousands of Spanish retirees heading to the coast in the middle of winter, there’s a very good chance they’re on an Imserso holiday.And honestly, it’s one of those wonderfully Spanish things that deserves a little explanation.The idea began back in 1978, originally as a way of giving older people, particularly those who lived alone, the opportunity to enjoy holidays and social activities. But there was another clever idea behind it: keeping hotels, restaurants, transport companies and other tourism businesses working during Spain’s quieter months.Fast-forward forty years, and the programme has become a remarkably large operation.For the 2026–27 season, almost 880,000 places are being offered, covering Spain’s Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts, the Balearic and Canary Islands, cultural circuits, nature trips, provincial capitals, Ceuta and Melilla.And here’s the part that might make you raise an eyebrow.A nine-night coastal holiday can start at around €309, including accommodation, full board and transport in many cases. There’s even a specially reserved group of places costing just €50 for people with particularly limited financial resources.So who can actually go? What are the requirements? How does Spain decide who gets a place? Who pays for it? And why does the government consider holidays part of something as serious as healthy ageing?This week on Spanish Loops, Fran and I are taking a closer look at Imserso, the Spanish holiday programme that manages to combine retirement, tourism, social policy and a surprisingly good deal.So grab your coffee, pull up a chair, and let me tell you about one of Spain’s most curious traditions.Because retirement in Spain apparently comes with one very important rule:You’re not supposed to stop enjoying yourself.

There’s a place in Granada where history doesn’t simply sit behind glass or on the pages of a textbook. It’s right there, in front of you and carved into stone, painted on walls, buried beneath the floor, and wrapped up in one of the most fascinating stories of Spain.The Royal Chapel of Granada is the final resting place of Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon, the Catholic Monarchs. And yet, their decision to be buried here was not quite as straightforward as you might imagine.Originally, Toledo had been chosen as their burial place. So why Granada?Fran and I take you inside the Royal Chapel to unravel that story, from the final years of the Reconquest and the fall of Granada to the journey their remains made before reaching the magnificent chapel you can visit today.And then there’s the building itself.The Royal Chapel is a wonderful little lesson in the transition from the Middle Ages into the Renaissance. Look closely and you’ll find symbols, religious imagery, royal propaganda, sculpture, architecture and artwork all telling part of the story. It’s almost like walking through a visual Wikipedia of Renaissance Spain, except, thankfully, there’s no loading screen.This is also one of those places that makes you understand Granada a little differently. The Alhambra tells one part of the story. The Royal Chapel tells another:  the story of the Christian monarchy, its ambitions, its faith, and the enormous political changes taking place at the end of the 15th century.And yes, Jorge includes a visit to the Royal Chapel in The Essence of Southern Spain tour, because some places are simply too important to experience through a guidebook.So this week on Spanish Loops, Fran and I are opening the doors and taking you inside one of Granada’s most remarkable landmarks.History is waiting downstairs. And it has quite a story to tell.

You know what I love about history? Sometimes you discover something that makes you think, “Wait… how did I never know this?”So, imagine we’re having a beer together, and I tell you this:The mighty American dollar has a Spanish ancestor.Yep. Seriously.Long before the dollar became the currency we all know today, there was a Spanish coin called the Real de a Ocho, the famous Piece of Eight.And this little piece of silver was everywhere.It was minted in the Spanish Empire, using enormous quantities of silver coming from the Americas, and people were using it to buy and sell things across Europe, the Americas and Asia. In fact, it became one of the first truly international currencies.And here's the fun part: when people didn't have exactly the amount they needed, they could literally cut the coin into pieces. That's where the famous “pieces of eight” comes from.But this isn't just some curious story about an old Spanish coin.That Spanish silver helped inspire the U.S. dollar, and there are even traces of the Piece of Eight in the way American financial markets once quoted prices in eighths.And then things get even more interesting.Because behind this coin is the enormous financial machine of the Spanish Empire, the Habsburgs, the Bourbons, American silver mines, international trade… and eventually the financial world that would lead us toward modern currencies and markets.So, next time somebody tells you that the dollar is purely an American story, you might want to buy them another beer.Because there's a very Spanish story hiding behind it.And that's exactly the kind of forgotten story we love telling here on Spanish Loops.Discover Spain every week with Fran And Jorge. The answer is not as simple as you might think. Spain has introduced a “positive list” approach, meaning that not every exotic or wild animal can simply become somebody’s pet. There are also increasingly strict rules surrounding the commercial sale and transfer of companion animals.And, of course, sitting in the middle of the room is the big elephant… or perhaps we should say bull.Bullfighting.Fran and I have already dedicated an entire episode to this controversial Spanish tradition, so we are not going down that road again.
