Davis has written a book about something whose success is often invisible - should "The Preventioneers" be successful, there is nothing to show/see.The author has pulled something of a magical trick, as his excellent book is about an issue for which there is no obvious evidence or visible result.And that, of course, is the sleight of hand, for if the efforts of his subjects bring success, the disaster does not happen."The Preventioneers: Diseases, Disasters, and the Discoveries That Changed Our World" takes on a journey through inspiring stories of individuals who shaped prevention as a public good.For those of us concerned about climate change, Davis explores the motivations and achievements of climate scientist James Hansen.It's an enjoyable book, well worth reading.

The fourth seminar in the Powering the Future series was presented by Dr. David Kearns from the Global CCS Institute.Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is increasingly recognised as essential to achieving net zero, particularly in hard-to-abate sectors such as cement, steel, chemicals and LNG. This seminar examined the role of CCS in Australia and the broader Asia-Pacific region, where industrial emissions, energy demand growth and existing infrastructure make carbon management especially important. The presentation outlined why most credible climate pathways include large-scale CCS deployment, and how the technology is evolving alongside broader decarbonisation efforts.The seminar also explored recent advances in CCS policy, deployment and technology development across Australia and the region, including new projects, carbon management hubs and cross-border collaboration. Alongside this progress, it will address the major barriers still limiting deployment — including policy uncertainty, investment and infrastructure challenges, and the need for stronger market incentives. Greater City of Shepparton's Climate Resilience Officer, Jack Bowmaker, has encouraged city residents to attend the first-ever "GV Home Energy Expo" on Sunday, June 14.Mr Bowmsaker, or "Jack" to most, points to an array of reasons why people should visit the expo, among them, they can learn how to set up and equip their homes, making them cheaper and more comfortable places to live.The expo is free, and those attending will have the chance to win a portable induction hotplate when they register on the City of Greater Shepparton Facebook page.

Book author and associate professor, Fernando Racimo, discusses academia's complicity in the polycrisis, and its potential for transformation towards serving social and ecological well-being.His book, "Science in Resistance", provides a first-person account of the Scientist Rebellion, a global movement of scientists and scholars rising in collective resistance for climate and social justice. Racimo combines his own experiences in activism with interviews with dozens of scientist-activists around the world, as well as insights from research on activism and direct action.Racimo, an Associate Professor of Ecology and Evolution at the "University of Copenhagen", explores the challenges academics face when taking a stand against systems of oppression. He focuses particularly on how academic institutions are complicit in exploitative and extractive logics, and how they could be transformed from the bottom up to become institutions that foster social and ecological well-being.The webinar was organised by the School of Regulation and Global Governance from the Australian National University.
