Sydney, Nova Scotia, 1992  When 18 year old McDonald's employee Derek Wood finished his shift, he lingered for a time in the closed restaurant before exiting. Unknown to the staff remaining to complete overnight tasks, Derek had propped open a basement door and in a matter of moments he would return with two friends armed with knives, a shovel, and a gun. The resulting robbery gone wrong will lead to mass murder and an entire community struggling to understand how this could happen and who was responsible. A workplace death at a Halifax, Nova Scotia Walmart has become international news due to the incidents unimaginably horrific circumstances. 19 year old Gursimran Kaur and her mother worked together at a Halifax Walmart. During their evening shift on Oct 19th, Gursimran’s mother grew increasingly worried after not seeing her daughter for over an hour. She searched the store, asking coworkers for help. But nothing could have prepared her for the devastating discovery that awaited her in the bakery’s oven.
