For her 36th birthday,  anesthesiologist Gerhardt Konig whisks his engineer wife, Arielle, away to celebrate her birthday with a romantic getaway.  Gerhardt secretly plans the vacation, having family members and a hired nanny stay with their two boys. The couple decide to hike a popular trail up a ridge of the Ko’olau mountains, leading up to the Pali Puka, a gorgeous rock formation frames the east side of O’ahu.  The trip is intended to help ease tension after months in couples therapy from Gerhardt accusing Arielle of infidelity.  Arielle denies his accusations and doesn’t understand where they are coming from so she wants her husband’s trust back, but it seems Gerhardt is only becoming more jealous and abusive, including sexual assaults, since he accused her of infidelity.  During the romantic birthday hike, Arielle wants to brave it and make it to the top, but when she sees the last uphill stretch, she chooses to stay where she is, waiting for Gerhardt as he completes the climb. When Gerhardt returns, he grabs a picture of Arielle up in a tree, but suggests the couple get a selfie from the edge of the trail, overlooking Oahu. Arielle smiles for the photo, but immediately after asks her husband to step forward so she can get away from the edge.  As Arielle follows her husband, he suddenly turns, grabs her upper arms and pushes her toward the edge, telling her “Get back over there. I’m so f***ing sick of you!” At first, Arielle thinks Gerhardt is playing, but when he shoves her toward the edge of the cliff again, pins her down, pulls a syringe and a vial from his bag attempting to fill the syringe to inject her. Arielle knocks the syringe from Gerhardt’s hands, however the doctor digs in his bag again, possibly looking for another. But instead, he reaches for a rock and bashes his wife in the head repeatedly. Other hikers hear Arielle's screams and run to her aid. Gerhardt Konig takes off into the woods, covered in blood and facetimes his adult son, Emile, who is shocked from his father’s appearance. When Miranda Corsette loses both parents, she moves in with her grandmother in Gulfport, Florida. Her grandmother is pleased to see the teen preparing for a Valentine’s Day date. Just after 1 a.m., aspiring lawyer Lauren Mullins drives home after a night of drinking in Cambridge, Massachusetts. As an MIT police officer and a man on a moped slow for a red light, Mullins fails to brake. She crashes into the moped, sending it flying into the back of the police car.   The moped driver, 73-year-old Daniel O'Neil, is rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. Cambridge police find Mullins extremely intoxicated and belligerent. The Suffolk University law student is charged with operating under the influence, causing serious bodily injury and negligent operation of a vehicle.   Officers are unable to conduct a standardized field sobriety test due to Mullins' belligerent behavior, but they note her slurred speech and extreme unsteadiness. The 32-year-old has a history of alcohol-related arrests, with a record dating back to 2014. She has been arrested seven times in the past three years on charges ranging from disorderly conduct to aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.   O'Neil initially survives but later succumbs to his injuries. Mullins now faces a motor vehicle homicide charge. Dr. Hamid Mirshojae and his new wife have a six-month-old daughter. He also has three children from a previous marriage, which ended in an ugly divorce and legal battles that have continued for 15 years. Dr. Hamid Mirshojae and his first wife, Ahang Kelk Mirshojae, began divorce proceedings in 2009 when he applied for a restraining order to keep her away from their $6 million marital home. In the petition, he cited "physical violence," accusing Ahang of repeatedly punching him. Legal disputes have continued since. Ahang Mirshojae managed the office of the Woodland Hills Medical Clinic and remained an employee there until 2016, when Dr. Mirshojae reportedly caught her embezzling substantial sums from the clinic. Dr. Mirshojae continued his standard practice. An hour after closing Woodland Hills Medical Clinic and Urgent Care for the day, he was ambushed by a masked gunman near his SUV around 5:30 p.m. The LAPD arrived 42 minutes later to find the 61-year-old primary care and emergency physician with a gunshot wound to the back of the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say a single gunman fled on foot. The investigation led officers to his ex-wife. Rumors of a Luigi Mangione sex tapes underlines the  public fascination with the alleged murderer.  What about the facts in this case? Just hours after Luigi Mangione was taken into custody in Pennsylvania, he faced a murder charge. The second-degree murder charge joined charges of forgery, carrying firearms without a license, tampering with records or identification, possessing instruments of crime, and providing false identification to law enforcement authorities. The initial charges were local to Pennsylvania. However, the NYPD also charged Mangione with possession of a loaded firearm, possession of a forged instrument, and criminal possession of a weapon. Mangione will be extradited to New York, but that transfer likely will not happen for several days. Mangione was arrested while sitting in the back of an Altoona McDonald's. He was wearing a mask, eating breakfast, and looking at his laptop when an employee suspected he was the subject of a manhunt out of New York. Altoona police arrived, and Mangione began to shake when officers asked him to lower his mask and confirm if he had been in New York recently. A search of Mangione revealed a ghost gun, a silencer, and multiple fake IDs. Officers arrested the 26-year-old on several charges but not for the murder of Brian Thomas. Mangione faces charges of forgery, carrying a firearm without a license, tampering with records or identification, possession of instruments of crime, and providing false identification to law enforcement.
