Ep 237: What Happens When Clients Aren't Motivated by Goals?
Coaching sessions are all about the goal, right? Not always! In this episode of The Coaching Hub Podcast, I challenge the traditional notion that coaching conversations must revolve around goals. Instead, I advocate for a more holistic, individualised coaching style that places the client's personal growth and motivation at the centre.
I explore the concepts of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation, highlighting how clients find meaning and drive in different ways. I encourage coaches to shift their focus from performance-based targets to understanding what energises their clients, whether that's external rewards or finding genuine enjoyment in the process itself.
Rather than sticking to rigid goal-setting frameworks like SMART goals, I share how to use visioning techniques, metaphors, and images to help clients identify their "North Star." After all, the best coaches create spaces for meaningful exploration, allowing clients to define success in their own terms and experience lasting motivation.
What’s inside:
- Only about 20% of people are motivated by goals, so focusing solely on goal-led coaching can miss the majority of clients
- Exploring both extrinsic (external rewards) and intrinsic (personal enjoyment) motivation helps clients understand what drives them
- Identifying what energises clients, beyond motivation, can guide more personalised and effective coaching conversations
- The best coaches are flexible and adaptable, creating a personalised experience that puts client growth at the centre
- The misconception that all coaching conversations must be goal-oriented.
