Day eleven of Chad Daybell’s trial focused heavily on the attempted shooting of Tammy Daybell, Alex Cox’s activity in the days surrounding it and additional evidence showing that Chad’s “light” and “dark” rating system extended well beyond Lori Vallow and the murder victims. Fremont County Detective Vince Kaaiakamanu testified that Cox had searched for information about rifle accuracy, AR components, cold-weather shooting, suppressors and whether rounds could penetrate a vehicle like the Dodge Dakota Tammy drove. Records also showed Cox had visited a gun range repeatedly in the days before Tammy died and that one of his devices had been detected near the Daybell property around the time of the October 9, 2019 shooting incident. Prosecutors also introduced messages showing Chad discussing “dark” ratings with Tammy and their children, including ratings assigned to children they knew through church. The defense tried to portray some of Cox’s gun-related searches as consistent with hunting and emphasized that Tammy herself initially believed the masked man had been carrying a paintball gun. Jurors also learned more about Charles Vallow’s attempts to warn Tammy about Chad and Lori’s affair, including an email in which Charles told Tammy that he had “vital and disturbing” information about their spouses.

Day twelve shifted toward Tammy’s sudden death and Chad’s conduct immediately afterward. Former neighbor and funeral director Steven Schultz testified that Chad declined an autopsy, pushed to hold Tammy’s funeral quickly and said he did not want to “drag this out,” leaving Schultz uneasy enough to privately tell a relative that something did not sit right. Other friends and neighbors described Tammy’s death as shocking and unexpected, with several testifying that she had appeared healthy and active beforehand. Realtor Ron Arnold said Chad later discussed placing another home on his property and, after JJ and Tylee had already been reported missing, assured Arnold that the children were fine and that everything would eventually work out. Arnold also said the construction Chad discussed would have required excavation on the same property where the children’s remains were later found. Principal Richard Garner testified that Tammy had been energetic, busy and physically active at school, directly undercutting the defense suggestion that she had been in declining health. The day reinforced the prosecution’s argument that Tammy’s death did not look natural to people who knew her and that Chad’s words and actions afterward raised questions that only grew once the children were discovered buried on his land.
