EP 24: ATB 2019 Permanent Makeup Conference Recap with Teryn Darling, Will Anthony, Mary Ritcherson, and Daria Chuprys

Unregulated microblading doesn’t just lead to badly done brows but is an infringement on basic human rights. Luckily the good people of Missouri won’t have to worry about unlicensed microbladers for much longer though thanks to the work of Kaety Bowers and Meg Melchert. It was an honor to have them on the show today and hear them speak about their activism for a more regulated PMU community in Kansas City. After a woman ended up with four eyebrows due to shockingly amateur microblading work, Katy and Meg decided that they had to take a stand, and today they tell us about how they teamed up with some fellow PMU artists and took the issue to the board at the state level.

Getting started as a working professional in the PMU world is totally doable, but it is going to cost you time, money, and a big dose of persistence. While the resources you put in will be large, knowing where to seek your education will help you save as much of them as possible. Today’s guest is Kelly Hankamer from Moonage Daydream Esthetics, and she joins us to shed some light on what becoming a permanent makeup professional looks like in today's industry. Kelly gets into all the courses she has taken to be able to offer services such as esthetics, permanent cosmetics, and MedSpa solutions.

In today’s episode, we do a recap of the highlights and intense preparation that went into the 2019 America the Beautiful Permanent Makeup Conference hosted in LA. It was an amazing event and we get to sit down with the organizers to hear their vision. We also spoke to some of the guests and vendors who attended, learning just how much of a blast they all had. This year’s event boasted amazing speakers, a well-organized layout, an authentic community, high health and safety standards, and a few huge parties too. On today's show, we are joined by SMP expert and all-round wealth of permanent makeup knowledge, Damien Porter! Damien works at Team Micro and has years of experience in both industrial work and training. Our topic for today is the latter and how training in the industry can be improved for the good of all! We discuss the harmful effects of fast-tracking programs and under-skilled artists working in the field, how pre-screening and self-regulation might help and the improved state of the industry.

Benaiah is a fellow SMP expert and permanent make-up artist and she has two locations where she works from, one in Maryland and one Nevada! Our focus for today's conversation is the running of a business and we talk about expansion, locations, second locations and when is the right time to do each action that growing a business requires. Benaiah shares her experiences of the permanent makeup business and we make the argument that we all can all do with a bit of guidance and help in getting situated and acquainted with the many sides of the business.

On the show today, we are joined the Brow Bade, Chere'e Marniece! We are so happy to share this conversation with you in which Chere'e shares her journey in permanent make-up, her thoughts on dark lip correction and ideas on how the industry should approach working on different skin tones. This is one of the more lively discussions for the show and although Valerie and Chere'e actually do essentially agree, there are definitely some points of difference, which they happily point out!
