In this conversation, Laura meets ‘smellologist’ Keren Bester to explore the intricate relationship between smell and dreams. They delve into Keren's PhD research on olfactory perception and its philosophical implications and how this can relate to dreams. They discuss how smell influences memory and personhood, the impact of COVID when many people, who lost their sense of smell (anosmia), realised the importance of this mainly unconscious sense in their lives.  They also look at the potential for using smell as a tool in lucid dreaming and whether certain smells can provoke good or bad dreams.

And are you one of the few people who can actually smell something in a dream? Do you have smelly dreams? If so, Keren would like to hear from you. Her contact details are below.

Keren shares her personal journey and the challenges of researching a sense that is often overlooked and vital to our sense of Self.

Keren’s website is www.chemicalpoetry.com (an updated version is coming soon!)

[email protected]

She’s keen to hear from people who:

- have experienced smell in their dreams

- have explicitly experienced not being able to smell i.e. noticing in a dream they can't smell something

- anyone who would like to participate in research using smell to prompt lucidity and/or influence dream content
