Ep. 300 - Flyman Simon answering your fear of flying questions

Ever wondered what pilots actually go through before stepping into a commercial cockpit? In this episode of the Lovefly podcast, host Paul Tizzard is joined by aviation operations expert and fleet manager Caressa Bray. Together, they pull back the curtain on flight training, demystifying aviation terminology, exploring how pilots handle fear and complex manoeuvres, and explaining why commercial aviation is exceptionally safe. Caressa Bray is the Co-Founder and COO of Aero Pathways, an aviation student support and mentorship company focused on helping aspiring pilots navigate flight training with confidence. With a background in flight school operations, fleet management, and aviation education, she brings a unique perspective on the challenges students face from their first lesson through certification. Caressa is passionate about improving the student experience, strengthening retention, and helping the next generation of aviation professionals find their path in the industry. What you'll learn: The truth about airplane "stalls" and why they have nothing to do with engine failure How full-motion flight simulators prepare pilots for every scenario The rigorous safety briefings and protocols conducted before every single flight Why understanding aviation mechanics can help put an anxious flyer's mind at ease. Meet Suzanne... Suzanne’s fear of flying began suddenly at 21, despite never having experienced a bad flight or aviation incident. She went through years of avoiding flying, including periods lasting more than a decade. She tried Flying Without Fear courses, books and other techniques over many years, with varying degrees of success. A particularly difficult experience saw her refused boarding because she was so distressed about flying. In 2022, her fear reached its lowest point when she couldn't even leave home to go to the airport for a family holiday. She then discovered Lovefly and the 30-day programme, returning to the resources and community that had helped her in the past. She explains how the constant exposure to other fearful flyers successfully boarding flights and arriving safely helped change her mindset. Her biggest breakthrough came when she decided: she would only allow herself to be afraid if the pilot actually declared an emergency. She also discovered the value of keeping her brain fully occupied, using puzzle and strategy games during the airport experience and flight. She successfully flew to Barbados, describing it as a trip of a lifetime—and is now looking forward to Jamaica. Suzanne now describes herself as someone who “used to be a fearful flyer.” Her message to other fearful flyers is simple and powerful: if she could overcome a fear that had affected her for decades, change is possible. In this episode of the Lovefly podcast, Paul speaks with Andrea about her 35-year battle with flight anxiety and trapped panic. After an offhand remark during a 1991 flight triggered a panic attack, Andrea spent decades avoiding air travel, missing out on family trips, and struggling with anticipatory dread. Discover how she broke a 35-year avoidance loop using full-scenario visualization, EFT tapping, flight chunking, and the Lovefly community—and how she’s now heading to Europe! What you'll learn in this episode: Why fear of flying is often about panic and control, not plane safety. How childhood memories and offhand comments can plant seeds of flight anxiety. The danger of "stopping the mental movie" at peak panic—and how visualization fixes it. Daily preparation habits: EFT tapping, flight footage desensitization, and positive affirmations. The 15-minute in-flight "chunking" method to stay grounded during long trips.
