What do you say when your child says “I’m fat”? What do you do when grandma makes a comment at the dinner table? How do you raise a kid who has a healthy relationship with food and their body without swinging into diet culture or untethered “anything goes” territory? Dr. Whitney Caceres has the answers — and they’re more nuanced and more doable than anything you’ll find in a parenting trend.

Albiona sits down with Dr. Whitney, a board-certified pediatrician, founder of Modern Mommy Doc, and author of the new book Raising Body Confident Kids, to talk about breaking the generational cycle of body shame — starting with the stories we’re still carrying ourselves.

Inside, they explore:

  • How body shame gets passed from generation to generation — and why our own triggers are triggered hardest when our kids hit puberty at the same time we’re going through our own body changes
  • What to actually say when your child notices someone else’s body, asks why a celebrity looks different, or says “I’m fat” — including what not to say and why false reassurance backfires
  • The sweet spot between diet culture and body positivity — how to teach kids body literacy and function without labeling foods as good or bad or ignoring real health
  • How to handle body comments from grandparents and extended family — what to prep your kids to say, when to step in as the parent, and when ignoring is actually the right move
  • Yay or nay: overeating, birthday party food, the 20-minute pause rule, and when it’s okay to step in as the parent even when you’ve been giving your kid agency
