High walls, topped with Broken glass surround the building. The doorman, McMurdo is refuses to let anyone but Thaddeus enter, but when Holmes steps forward and reminds the giant man that the two of them boxed together, he flings the door open to them all. The doorman then explains that Thaddeus' brother, Bartholomew has not left his room all day. Thaddeus enters the house, and talks to the housekeeper, who has been crying. While he is away, Holmes and Watson notice that the grounds are covered with holes, clearly where they had searched for the treasure. Thaddeus comes rushing out, screaming that something is wrong with his brother. Holmes and Watson head up the stairs with Thaddeus, and Miss Morstan consoles the housekeeper. They look through the locked door's key hole, and see Bartholomew's face staring back at them with a strange look on his face. They break down the door and go inside. Looking around the room, they find a chemical laboratory, and a set of steps leading to a hole in the ceiling. Bartholomew is stole cold, and Holmes finds a note that reads "The Sign of the Four" next to him. Holmes declares that he has only a little more info because he can announce to have solved the case, and he tells Thaddeus to go to the police.
