When's the last time a prospective client stopped responding, and you decided to give them space because you didn't want to seem pushy?

You sent a follow-up message. They didn't reply. So you waited.   But while you're waiting for them, is it possible they're waiting for you?   Silence in a sales conversation doesn't always mean someone has lost interest. Sometimes the next step isn't clear. Sometimes your message doesn't give the prospect anything to respond to. And sometimes, in an effort to avoid bothering someone, you unintentionally stop guiding the conversation.

In this episode of the Sales Maven Show, Nikki Rausch flips the usual conversation about ghosting and asks an unexpected question: Who actually went quiet first?

You learn five questions to determine whether a prospect is still engaged, what your follow-up may be missing, and when it's time to reconnect or confidently move on.   The Transformation   Before listening, you may find yourself:   -Assuming a prospect isn't interested because they haven't responded.   -Hesitating to follow up more than once because you don't want to bother someone.   -Unsure whether to reach out again or let an opportunity go.   After listening, you learn how to:   -Recognize the difference between a stalled conversation and a genuinely unresponsive prospect.   -Follow up with specific questions that make responding easier.   -Decide when to continue the conversation and when to bless and release.

Key Takeaways

In this episode, Nikki shares:

-Why following up once doesn't necessarily mean you've done your part.   -How your silence may unintentionally communicate a lack of interest.   -Five questions that reveal where a sales conversation has stalled.   -Why a clear question creates more opportunity for a response than a general check-in.   -How scheduling a circle-back call prevents unnecessary waiting.   -When to use a closing-the-loop message instead of continuing to follow up.   -How thoughtful follow-up demonstrates service without chasing a prospect.

Featured Framework: Five Questions to Determine Who Ghosted Whom

Before deciding a prospect has ghosted you, Nikki encourages you to examine what's actually happened.

Have they replied at all since your last conversation?   A response such as "not yet" or "check back next month" means they're still communicating. The opportunity may not be moving as quickly as you'd like, but this isn't ghosting.   How many times have you followed up since they went quiet?   One unanswered message isn't necessarily enough. Nikki recommends a thoughtful follow-up rhythm, generally allowing two additional messages after the first unanswered attempt.   When you've sent more than three messages without a response, it's time to consider a closing-the-loop message rather than continuing to chase.   Did your last message include a clear question?   When your message doesn't give someone something specific to answer, there may be no obvious reason for them to respond.   Review your wording from the prospect's perspective. Did you make the next step easy?   Did you schedule the next step together before the conversation ended?   A scheduled next step removes uncertainty. When a meeting gets missed, offer grace and make rescheduling simple rather than assuming the prospect is no longer interested.   Where did the conversation stop?   Did the prospect need time to think, review information, or consult with a committee?   Your follow-up becomes more effective when it addresses the specific reason the conversation paused.   Rather than asking, "Are you still interested?" ask about the decision, meeting, or information they were considering.

The Closing-the-Loop Message

When repeated follow-ups haven't received a response, a closing-the-loop message gives you a way to end the outreach respectfully.   Nikki shares how one client sent these messages to prospects who had gone quiet. Within ten minutes, one prospect responded, and the conversation reopened.   The lesson isn't to keep pursuing every opportunity indefinitely. It's to take thoughtful action before deciding the opportunity is gone.   A Quote Worth Remembering   "Following up isn't bothering people when someone has shown interest. A thoughtful follow-up is being of service to that person."

Try This This Week

Think of one prospect you've been waiting to hear from.   Review your most recent exchange and work through Nikki's five questions.   Then choose one action: ask a more specific question, offer a time to reconnect, schedule a circle-back conversation, or send a closing-the-loop message.   The goal isn't to force a response. It's to make your next step intentional.   Who This Episode Is For   This episode is especially valuable when you:   -Have prospects who seem interested but stop responding.   -Worry that following up makes you appear pushy.   -Rely on vague messages such as "just checking in."   -Have opportunities sitting in your pipeline without a clear next step.   -Want a repeatable way to decide whether to reconnect or move on.
