Podcast 571: Crashes, Rashes and Awards

Aaron Pufal is the man in the van with the plan. This summer he set a new cannonball record on an electric motorcycle, making it coast to coast in just a smidge over 100 hours. But what's crazy is that the first time he ever rode the soon to be record setting Livewire, or any other electric motorcycle, is when he threw a leg over at the start of his cannonball run. It didn't take long for Aaron and his team to realize that they were going to have to throw away their plans and listen to the hard data from the bike. This would tell them the optimal speed for distance and time. And of course finding charging stations wasn't as easy as they thought either, so this required on the spot research and mapping. But thanks to his grit and his team's brains, they managed to successfully make it to the destination and break the previous record be a good margin. Aaron also runs the ADV Cannonball, which is a whole nother barrel of monkeys. We talk to him about this amazing event, as well as his book, podcast and plans for his next record. The SEMA show is one of the biggest car shows, but it's really more than that. It's the world's premier trade event for the automotive specialty-equipment and aftermarket industry, and now it's getting even bigger with the addition of motorcycles. So basically, under one roof you will find new cars, old cars, side by sides, trucks, motorcycles and basically anything with a motor. There's restoration, customization, modification, and everything in between. They are especially known for their custom build debuts, showcasing some of the most unique and inspiring vehicles. It's worth going just for the tool vendors, which fill an entire hall by the way. We talk to VP of Events Tom Gattuso who tells us what we can expect. Perfectly partnered with this topic, we also talk about when a deal might not be a deal when there aren't any parts available, and if it's a good idea to buy a project bike from CoPart. Liza is back from Pakistan, and has some interesting stories about how societal norms are changing, and allowing for more women riders. She also made an Ebay purchase she has no memory of making, but boy, was it a good one. Stumpy John has a ride report from his trip visiting all of the peaks in the Sierras, and the group talks about Harley's decision to pull out of King of the Baggers. And lastly, we read some awesome listener emails. Part 2 of our Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials interviews. If you haven’t listened to part 1, I recommend checking it out. Our first two interviews are both with racers on electric motorcycles, but they are completely different. First up is Rennie Scaysbrook who is riding the fully faired Lightning motorcycle with a potential of 250+ mph. He has raced at Isle of Man and Pikes Peak, but this is his first time at Bonneville. He shares with us his first experiences on the salt. Next up we sit down with Kit and Bear on the Zero with a sidecar. This is their 2nd time at Bonneville, and they are feeling good about the 4 new speed records they set. But of course none of this would happen without the leadership of Delvene Reber. Liza asks her how she got involved with land speed racing, and how she manages such an amazing team of volunteers. There are only a few places on this planet where you can go as fast as you can and try set a land speed record, and the Bonneville Salt Flats is the most iconic of those places. With 7 miles of nothing by flat white ground, racing and records have been happening here for over a decade. At the BMST you will see everything from 50cc minibikes to 3000+cc streamliners, all pushing the boundaries of what a motorcycle can and should be able to do. And with the Rung What Ya Brung class, you might even see a Buddy 125 scooter putting down the course (hint hint). Liza and Neal spent the week there, hosting the spectator tent, helping teams out, and coming up with good bad ideas. In this episode, Neal talks about his first experience on the salt, and how it felt to push a buddy scooter to it’s limits. Liza talks to Utah Matt about his first time at the salt flats, and Detroit talks about his first time ever riding a Buell as part of the Buell Brothers Racing Team. Neal sits down with the Sodium Distortion Racing Team, who is generally known as the team to go to when you need help with anything at all. We've got a lot to discuss on this one. First up, Neal got a potential Bonneville bike. We will be working on this project all year, so join us on this journey as we discuss what it's going to take to build a land speed racer. Next up, we talk about different hot topics. Can Liza set another world record with toys? Is Livewire a sinking ship? Is it fair what's happening to CanAm? For our big topic, John asks Ai what would be a good topic to discuss on a motorcycle podcast. Let us know what you think. And lastly, we read emails and get all caught up. Keep them coming! The gang is back, and we've got a great topic for you; the Spanish Bikes. Montesa, Ossa and Bultaco to name a few. In the 20th century, Spain had quite an impact on the world of motorcycles. Their bikes were nimble, fast, and won races. So we didn't they survive? Join us on a journey into Emma's History Hole. It's deep, it's dark, it's wonderful. Liza and Neal are fresh back from Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials, and they have big ideas. They want to rally the Misfits to build and race a bike next year, so what bike should it be? There are many different classes, so they go through the list and narrow it down to the right bike. What is it? Listen and find out. With Liza, Stumpy John, Miss Emma, Nak, Neal and Naked Jim. Elspeth Beard has become a household name in the motorcycle world, but it hasn’t always been that way. Back in 1982 she headed off on her around the world motorcycle journey, returning home years later and resuming her life in England as an architect and then a mother. It wasn’t until 2017, when her book came out, that the world would come to know Elspeth for her motorcycle journey. We were fortunate to interview her in early 2017 before the book’s release, and then again in 2018 after she had become the legend we know of her today. We are back in the studio for a new podcast, and it feels good. Liza is back from her world record ride, and reports on her time at Sturgis Bike Week. Emma is back from Europe and gives a report on her two tours. John, Neal and Jim helped to keep the garage and podcast going, and we all catch up on what we've been doing and where we are going.
