137: The Shotgun Approach: Why Collecting Exercises Never Fixes Your Golf
A mobility drill off Instagram. A power exercise off YouTube. A stretch your mate's coach told him about. Before long you've got 15 or 20 random exercises you do whenever you remember, in no order, with no progression, and no idea whether any of it is right for your body.
Shaun calls this the shotgun approach: firing a lot of pellets and hoping something hits the target.
This episode is not a go at anyone doing it. Golfers end up here because they care and they're trying. The problem is that effort without a system is what keeps the wheels spinning. Shaun breaks down the three reasons the shotgun approach always fails, and what has to be in place instead before any of that work starts paying off in your golf.
In this episode:
- Why a pile of exercises and an actual program are not the same thing
- Reason 1: no assessment. If you're not assessing, you're guessing, and you may be hammering mobility you already have while ignoring the one restriction wrecking your swing
- Reason 2: no sequence. Foundations, then strength, then speed and power. You can't bolt speed work onto a stiff, weak base and expect it to hold
- Reason 3: no progression. Progressive overload is why programs work. A drill you do whenever you remember always starts from zero
- The golfer who'd been training off social media for ages, frustrated that nothing was changing, and what his program actually looked like when we pulled it apart
- Why "busy" and "better" are not the same thing
